Night riding

Tonight was my first ever night ride on a bike, mountain bike. I did it at Stewart Field State Park in Newburgh NY, which is close to my home. What can I say but OMG, thank you hunters for using the park during the day so that we can ride safely at night. It was awesome and my Cygolite 850 made me forget that it was dark outside.
Props to the Stewerts at Steward for guiding the ride and letting me in on the fun. Tom, Ralph and Joel made my night fun and better than sitting on the couch.
Post up your night ride tales. We didn't encounter any wild animals but you could hear branches breaking, so they were close!
I hope to post a night ride picture soon, if it comes out visible at all.....

Really would love to try a night ride some time, but man, we have mountain lions here, and just two weeks ago there was a bear in our back yard--and I live basically in the suburbs! Guess if I went with a couple other riders it'd be a little less freaky...

A pic from the ride. I can't wait to do it again. It is a totally different experience.
We have bears, coyotes and (rare) mountain lions but no reported incidents

Those mountain lions usually jump you from behind.....right on the back of your neck.
Don't worry about it, the pain won't last long. Enjoy the ride!

If you keep doing this consider getting a second light. One on the bars and one on your helmet. It eliminates a lot of the shadows and gives you much better vision of the upcoming section of trail and around corners.

We ride with 3 lights typically. one on the helmet (the brightest), another on the bars and a red low wattage tail light. The tail light is especially good for the guys that fell back and want to see where you're at.
One guy has a bright tail light, almost blinding, so he rides last, haha

I have ridden with a buddy before in the dark. I had a bar mounted light and a cheap blinky taillight and he was using a halogen bar mount. (I did not charge enough) but we had a good time and it really made riding the usual trails... different.
