O Baby :)

My Mavic 729's came in today, I'm all smiles, just have to pop off the cassette, and I'm on the go, man these things are super beefy, my LBS was drooling over them, very very nice wheel set the rim is a carbon look, and the spokes, and hubs are all black.

Sweet! Have fun with them. How much did they cost altogether? (if you don't mind me asking)

Well retail with the hubs I got all built up was $600, I got them for $400, and I sold my old wheel set for $150, so in the end it cost me $250 for a $600 wheel set.

In your equation, your basis in the old wheelset is zero. The old wheels had to cost you something, no?

The new wheels cost you $400. You helped defray your ''cash out'' by selling your old wheels. They still cost you $400 though.

Look, I wasn't poking fun at your math skills I was enjoying your rationalization.

Well the wheelset I had on was the stock wheel set, so basiclly the $150 is like cash in my pocket, as they would have just sat in the garage, the retail on the wheelset is $600, my LBS, and best bud gave them to me at cost $400, so in theory it is $250 out of my pocket for a wheel set that retails for $600, but enough of that then. The hubs are Shimano Deore XT hubs, can't remember off hand what kind of spokes were used, but in the end just a killer wheel.

OK, your logic is why people get ripped off all the time trading in their cars.

You had two seperate transactions going on

Transaction #1

You sold a wheelset worth $150. It was worth (FMV) $150 before you sold it, and worth $150 after you sold it. You converted the 150 from something not easily spent (bike wheels) to something easily spent (cash).

Transaction #2

You purchased the new wheels for $400.00 (a decent deal, not the greatest deal with XT hubs. You can get them hand built at speedgoat for $383. Whoever quoted you $600 is loony ) with cash. The reason you feel it cost you only $250 is that your perceived value of your old wheels (They were just going to sit in your garage) was less than $150. However, someone thought they were worth $150.

Therefore, feeling they only cost you $250 is a rationalization

True, but then if his wheels were worth 150, then he was already out 150$. But he sold them, and gained 150, then took that money (which he was previously out) plus 250 to buy his new wheels. By using the logic you are saying, if his old wheels were worth 150, he was out 150$ whether they were sitting on his bike, or the money was used to buy new ones. Only 250$ actually "effected" him in the sense that because he had to get new ones he would have to shell out an extra 250$.
One way or another sweet wheelset.

What? What I was trying to say is that obviouslly the "speedgoat for $383" was USD, where as the prices I was talking about were CDN $.
