My '04 P.1 was only $499 to the average mortal, but being an employee I got it even cheaper. In my opinion, singlespeed is the only way to go for a FR urban rig, and the bike loves getting air. If gears are your thing though, the P.2 is a good option for a little more.

I ride a haro escape 8.2. I guess its not really considered an U/DJ bike, but comming from a bmx backround, I give it a lot of abuse and its holding up well.

Maybe the store price for the Kona Cowan is about 1000$. The retail for it is 1199 USD but it would be about 1000 at your lbs.

I think I'm gonna get an STP, probably a 1. I have only heard good things about them, the problem is hearing anything at all. It's hard to find people with experience with them, most of what I've heard is what I've read online on forums and the like.

I know of at least a few people who are happy with their STP's. The frames are supposedly pretty dang solid, and the components are about what other manufacturers throw on - whatever costs them as little as possible to get to their price point and make money.

Yeah, I'll probably convert it to a SS and put some hydros on it, but other than that just ride the crap out of it. I too have heard it's a solid frame.

Why would you want hydros instead of the Avids? I'd at least try them, and probably stick with them considering I'm happy with properly tuned V-brakes.
Single speed is a pretty good idea... I think I'd just make it a single ring and leave the gears in back, since that frame is supposed to be good for trials, I'd want a nice low ratio for trials-ie stuff.

I'd probably get avid hydro's. I will definitely give them a shot, don't get me wrong. I was riding another guy's bike tonight and he had hayes hydro's with 8" rotors and 1 finger braking was so pleasing it was surpsing. but if I can get those avid's to work well enough, then yeah I'll probably stick with them.

I'm most likely going to get the STP 2. I rode it and its absolutely perfect. I love the frame. The forks on the STP 2 are MZ comps so they're a little cheap but they work for now.
