I set out for an MTB commute today but there were too many downed trees from Saturday night's massive wind storm. And what little distance I made on the trail was full of puddles.

Here in the Texas Panhandle racing season starts on 3/20
After a long snowy winter we're having an early spring and the trails have been great.
In response to night rides, we have a weekly ride in which I ride with guys that are faster and younger than I am.
I have let my technique slip and haven't felt comfortable for a couple of weeks.
Saturday and Sunday I rode trails in Palo Duro canyon. That's where I do most of my riding.
I concentrated on both upping my cadence and my technique. Both rides were great. I broke the 9 mph average on a 20 mile ride and hit 9.7 on an 8 mile run thru some intermediate technical stuff that is usually part of several races held in the Canyon.
The trick now is to continue to better my riding technique and get through several tough section that have been my nemesis for the last year.

Did the MTB commute again today. Feeling great, might have done some PR's. The forest is still gradually falling down from our big storm a month ago. There was one fallen tree leaning across that I knew about but had forgotten, and it's in the middle of a fast bit... I braked as much as I could, ducked, and felt my pack scrape it. Whew!
Lots of people out on the trails in the morning since the time change.
Yesterday, on a dog walk with kiddo in the papoose, I came across the Folsom Bulldogs MTB team doing hill repeats. That was fun to watch, to see a beanpole kid with handlebars 3x wider than his waist rocketing up the hill faster than anyone else. I talked to the coach at the top, he said they start in junior high. I'll have to keep this in mind, in ten years.

Found a new trail recently, and several of the trees were just about the width of my bars apart from each other!!! Overall, great trail, though.

Rode The Prarie City Race Series as a Beginner on my fully rigid '95 Marin Bear Valley SE. Had never done a MTB race (or any bike race) before. Hard but fun (and dusty!)

I'm just getting back into MTB after a long time off, and it feels so great to be on those trails again! Here is my new-old bike out on my ride today, with some great scenery in the background (that's the Connecticut River).

Had a great ride today. Some brand new trails and I just found this trail last week:

But, nailed my ankle on a rock and both bruised it and cut it.
My fully rigid SS is getting a fork next week, so last pics as a fully rigid.

Had a lot of fun yesterday. FIrst time I have been on the trails with friends in a good 6+ months, and forgot how physically demanding it is trying to keep up with that bunch! Still a good time was had by all, even if my butt was whooped by the end. Contemplating putting a rigid fork on my 29er, since the fork on their is complete crap. I haven't decided yet though.

Due to recent rains, the trails were going to be not just wet and muddy, but slippery. I took the fat bike instead and it proved to be the right choice, traction was plentiful while my buddies were slipping all over the place.

Got out for a short ride with the new fork last Sunday, and it is truly amazing. Now, I am waiting for a longer ride tomorrow!

It was wet this past Saturday. My 2nd ride with this bike. I've been riding my fully rigid SS Kona Unit exclusively since I got it last October. But I wanted an unbreakable 29er so I don't have to choose the best line. Mission accomplished. Rode with the usual suspects on their carbon 29ers and had a blast. I was last getting up there, but I was first getting down.
Transition TransAM 29:

I was even feeling spunky enough to ride up a small flight of stairs (4 steps) on the way back to the parking lot (towards the end of the video). I've never ridden up stairs before.
It was a good ride for me.
