Worst crashes

Feel free to talk about and share pictures of your worst crashes. I managed to get one of my crashes on video camera, but since it took up too much room on my computer, I could only get a couple of photos from it. My one was about a year ago, where I took a cross-country bike over a skateboard ramp. The photo explains the rest...

I had a bad one today. I was on my first 30 miler and I had bonked.I went around a corner and hit a post just sticking out,I turned down this steep downhill and endoed I unclipped and my chainrings went deep into my leg I then rolled three times and hit a tree. Broke my helmet and still had to ride about 15 miles.

I had a pretty bad one the other day. I was riding up some steps and I did a wheelie, but didn't clear the whole lot. My front tyre hit a step and I did a handstand on the handlebars. The next thing, me and my bike fell onto the concrete steps. I'm still cut and bruised.

3 weeks ago i went off like a 1 foot kicker, lost my balance in the air and came down with all my weight on my knee. i landed on my very hard packed dirt and stone road. i shreaded the knee on my new running pants..both layers too. i still have scabs, they should leave some scars but i still ride all the same.

Have you ever seen skinnier legs! Looks like an old TV antenna sticking up in the air. :D

My worst one was last weekend, Sunday. I was going down at around 20km/h through this trail with LOADS of rocks and what I didn't notice after was that under the loose gravel there was a massive rock. I go straight, the wheel turns left, hits the rock and I fly over the bars. I wacked my shoulder in pretty bad and broke two fingers. :'( Luckily I was wearing a backpack and helmet so my back and head were OK. :) PITA to cycle home though. Anyway, HOPEFULLY by tomorrow I can take the cast off and cycle. Let's hope for the best.

No pics, sorry, but hopefully tomorrow or on Monday, whenever I go back up to that trail, I'll snap some pics of where I fell.

Coiler_Guy 05-14-05 05:46 AM

Yeah my legs do look kinda skinny in that pic. Uuuhhhh... must have something to do with the sunlight!!!
Think that's bad? look at my sister. Well I don't actually have pics of her, but just try imagining...

I do not have a "worst crash" since most of the time I crash it is pretty bad. My most memorable occured during a race. I was pulling off the best times ever when on my last run I let loose (no brakes at all)on a steep section of tight switch backs that were very sandy/rocky. Made it through the first 3, then in the middle of the fourth (happend to be the easiest of the turns) the front end washed out. I slid about 15 yards and ended up tangled in the boundry tape along with my bike. The course worker had to come and cut me out because I was so tangled up I could not free my self. Worst thing about it, a photographer from a local mag got shots of it :o . Not sure where the pics are so cant post 'em. At least I did place 2nd in the race. :D

My worst crashes always come when the front washes out. Otherwise I crash pretty much every ride I go out. I try to push/scare myself at least once a ride :)...

Skate park was probably the most annoying. I would dive into the bowl circle around and try to pop over a small hip, I kept washing out because I couldn't get my wheels to catch long enough on the way out due to the angle I had to hit it at. I would slide out, into the middle of the bowl, prertty funny site.

its not really a bad crash but it was my first i was coming down this hill at pretty high speeds and i saw this sharp turn and tried to slow down but was too late and endoed and ended up on some tree got minor cuts but thats about it

I've been reading this forum for only about a week, but this is my first post, interesting that this thread is the first one I've really had anything to contribute, anyway, I'm in Korea and the rules are alittle different over here, you can ride on all the trails, around hikers whatever, we went up and down a couple of mountains, we were on it hard for about 7 hours, and we were to our last downhill before heading home, I am still a noob and picked up too much speed, got caught up in some ruts and locked up both tires, skidded the rear wheel and then the front caught sending me over the top and half way down, well I had spokes caught in my derailer, and the rear wheel was bent and touching the frame, and it was all jammed up into the v-brake, so I got up and had to carry my bike about two miles to the LBS for a quick "tune-up". Stay with me here, I'm still not to the worst crash. So the guy put everything back together, except the rear brake!, before I continue, this is entirely my fault here, I didn't pay attention, due to fatigue, or whatever, but I had no rear brake when I left the shop. So we rode up on a cross walk, it has a bike ramp, on both sides, to get you across a major street, well I was following my buddy on his Trance up on to the walk way and then he cut down headed back to the sidewalk as fast as he could and I followed, he got on the brakes hard at the bottom for some reason and I swerved to avoid him, but he swerved right in front of me. I got one handful of air, no back brake, and one handful of front brake, on dry concrete, no drama, it simply drove me over in an endo in one fast clean motion right into the sidewalk. my shoulder still hurts, but the helmet saved my skin, at least I learned some lessons here......

It wasn't exactly a crash but here it goes: I was biking to some jumps when I decided to jump a stairset. I usually have my seat up a lot when I am cruising to wherever Im going (easier on the legs with the seat up). Anyways, I jumped the stairs and was thinking that my seat was slammed all the way down and I sacked my....err..."family jewels" on the seat. Nothing special but I was on the ground for some time.

valbowski1980 05-14-05 10:52 PM

I went over the handlebars of my Huffy when I was 12. Didn't feel too good but nothing broke. Nothing really bad boo boo wise when it comes to biking, basketball is a different story. I have fractured my humorus and disslocated my rist playing hoops.

rasheed 05-15-05 05:28 AM

i've been real fortunate that i haven't had any real bad crashes. i taco'd my front wheel going off a step down while off balance. broke the arch on my fork going off a step-up and hitting a tree upon landing, but i think my worst crash was off this long flat kicker we built up - threw you out instead of up. the tranny was sort of off cambre and was kind of soft.

i thought i'd boost it and see how much distance i could get so i hit it with a bit more speed than usual. when i landed my front tire washed out towards the right and i came down hard on my left shoulder. when i hit the ground my head snapped down, smashing my left cheek to the ground and knocking my helmet sideways. i got up, winded, left shoulder hanging down all ********. it was first time i had to just sit down for a good 30 secs and wait for my senses to come back. after shaking it off and dusting the dirt off myself, i picked up my bike and went home. i guess my pride was hurt more than my body on that one... haha :o

Coiler_Guy 05-17-05 04:59 PM

Sounds nasty. I was once riding my friend's Kona and hit a seat, flipped over the handlebars and landed on my head. Lucky I was wearing a helmet.

paintballdude 05-17-05 07:27 PM

Last week I got a new chainstay protector for my bike and it covered the cable for my rear derailer....Well I kept trying to change gears and it wasn't happening...So I was pedalling harder and going down a hill..All of a sudden...it just changed but it was too fast for me and I flew off the bike and into the pavement. I wasn't wearing a helmet. Luckily I'm alright.

My Most Unenjoyable Crash by BErad
I've had several, but the one that stands out went like this:
A friend and I had been riding singletracks for about 2 hours when we decided it was time to head back towards the car. We were both pretty spent so my focus, power and common sense were shot. We approached one section where the trial crosses a creek. The bridge sits about a foot off the trail and is in the middle of a sharp turn. I was approaching the bridge slowly and I can remember thinking to myself "get off and walk across"...but I didnt listen. I popped my front wheel up on the bridge and my back tire spun...bye-bye momentum. I was clipped in and there were no handrails on the bridge to grab. I fell (still attached to the bike) about 5 feet onto a large flat rock (an actual blessing) and landed on my shoulder and knee. I still have a nice scar on my right calf from the chainring.

Speaking of good crashes....
Does anyone here watch the show "Myth Busters"? A couple of weeks ago they had a "behind the scenes" episode where one of the crew members tried to bunny hop a Red Flyer wagon on a 40 pound Pee Wee Herman style bike. He didnt make it. One of the hardest face plants I've ever seen. The good folks at TLC even showed it in slow motion for me.
Call me sick, but I was crying from laughter.

i did see that and also laughed my @ss off. what was worse was that the girls set him up by saying he cleared it on his practice run next to the wagon. it was their encouragement that made him go for it. needless to say it was brutally bad.
