Giant Anthem Advanced vs. Trace Advanced
So I have decided to add a MTB to my stable. I am trying to decide between the Giant Anthem Advanced 27.5 2 and the Trace Advanced 27.5 2. I know there are a lot of other choices out there, but these are what I'm deciding between. I was leaning toward the Anthem due to the greater suspension travel. However, my LBS advised against it because most of the trails in the vicinity are relatively tame. Nonetheless, I am still leaning toward the Anthem. Maybe I don't "need" the greater travel, but does it hurt to have it? I am not interested in be speedy. Other than the suspension (and the dropper, which I probably wouldn't use much) it looks like the main difference between the two is the top tube. The Anthem's is straight, while the Trance has an elbow. I don't know how much difference that makes. I have experience with both the SRAM & Shimano equipment. I find them similar enough not to be a factor. The price difference between the two bikes is negligible. Any suggestions? Thanks!

In most cases, more suspension travel leads to more energy needed to climb, especially within the same brand of bikes. I think that the suspension travel has gone a little crazy these past years, and led to some terrible bikes for a while, bikes that were truly one trick ponies. The newer bikes are not so limited, but I do believe that the shop has a valid point.

I haven't ridden a giant with maestro rear suspension but it is suppose to be great. Around here I'd want the 140mm suspension and slacker head angle. I can and do ride a rigid here but when I really want to have fun I bring out my 150mm slack hardtail. 140mm really isn't that crazy anymore with the improvements in rear suspensions. They aren't just pedal bobbing monsters anymore. Now if it is basically flat where you live the 100mm would probably be more fun just because it will be lighter and quicker turning.

OK, first I assume you meant Giant Trance, not Trace, and if you look at the specs, the Anthem advanced has 100mm suspension, (Anthem advanced SX still only has 120mm) the Trance has 140mm. So not sure what they are telling you?
Personally I think the Trance is much better than the Anthem, and personally I own a Stance 120mm and like the feel of it better than the Anthem also. Stance just is not available with a carbon frame.

Different bikes for different uses. The Anthem is more of a cross country race machine, enough suspension to keep up speed over bumps. The Trance is a trail machine that can take the odd jump.

I have the Anthem X 29 w the Maestro suspension and am very happy with it. I have learned to buy a little more bike than I need because as you get better, your ride needs will change. I don't think I ever heard anyone on a trail ride complain about too much suspension travel and that Maestro suspension is all it is supposed to be. Good stuff!

If you get the chance, remote lockouts are well worth it. The Maestro suspension is excellent, but even better using the full abilities of CTD shocks and forks.
