I recomend biking to laguardia, throwing your bike on the plane and heading to moab.
That might be a bit costly though. I don't know if this helps, since I don't know new york, but here is a trail list for new york state. maybe something will be close to you.

I am not from NY but this should be a fun spot for you to check out Diablo

This is from their site ,
"Diablo Freeride Park is conveniently located 47 miles from New York City and consists of nearly 40 feature filled freeride and downhill mountain bike trails. The high-speed gondola jets riders 1,040 feet to the summit in only 6 minutes which means you’ll spend more time riding your bike and less time riding a chairlift. It is quite common for riders to log over 30,000 vertical feet in a single day."

Do you have a car? I'm also new to biking in NYC and i've been looking for trails, but my lack of a car has severly limited my options. I've heard good things about Ringwood State Park in New Jersey, about an hour out of NYC.

Within transit distance is this big park at the north end of the Bronx, almost in Westchester. I forget the name but it's at the end of the 4 and 1/9 subway lines. I'm planning to go up there when i get a free day and see what it's like. It's apparently far bigger than Central Park.. the trails are not obviously marked, but are apparently pretty fun.

Go to this website www.climbonline.org. I think you'll find
it useful. You'll like Bethpage, you just have to pay $6.00
for parking, if you don't want to pay you can park by the
    Massapequa LIRR station. Have fun.

Dunno. I wanna try to beat the deadline of may 25th. After that THEN you have to pay the $6.00.

And robo I will look into your suggested trails as well. And yes.....well actually I have access to the family car. Bethpage seems the closest but the thing is I don't always have access to the car. But to tell ya the truth I feel kinda scared frankly to take my bike on the subways and whatnot to get to new jersey. :|

Besides, after a day long ride I'm gonna be beat and would rather drive home. Using public transportation in the ny area is physical work in itself.
