Oversized 1996 GT Ricochet, special order?

Hi all, I recently helped a friend in acquiring a GT Ricochet in blue, made of 7005, with the serial S6E02206. According to this post and others, this serial indicates that the bike was made in May 1996. The problem is, the frame is 22" and every source I've come across indicates that 20" was the largest frame offered for this model during that year (22" was available in 93, 94, but only in chromoly according to bikepedia, others).

What do we have here? Did GT offer oversized frames through special order?

The fork is a Rockshocks Indy C. Rims are Mavic 238. Derailleur is a Shimano STX. Shifters are Shimano sl-mc37. Sorry for the bad pic, the bike is in pieces being restored atm.

my suggestion- toss this question up on the C&V forum. 96 isnt exactly C&V mountain bike, but there are a ton of posters on that forum who worked in the industry on the retail side and also a lot who mountain biked back in the 90s. There may be some 1st hand knowledge.
