this is my first post in the mountain bike forum and i am fairly new to bike forums but not to bikes i have been biking BMX for a while and want to go into mountain biking.
i would just like some opinions, reveiws on the p.1. i dont really like tall bikes since i ride a quite tiny one alot, any other suggestions of a mountain bike fit for me(no dual suspension, and somewere around 700, unless i can get a dual suspension for 700.)
thanks in advance for any replies

specialized P.1 same frame as my P.2 If you are looking to build a good hardtail disc freeride bike from scratch this is the place to start. i dont know much about the stock off the factory floor version seeing as how everything on my p.2 has been replaced, but I LOVE the frame geometry. i come from a BMX background and switching over to the P.2 was no problem.

I have had a 2004 alu P.1 for about 4 months now and I must say, I like it. All the stock parts took quite some beating and hold up just fine. The frame is definately worth upgrading and it being single-speed rocks!

Just curios what kinda riding do you plan on doing? One of my brother's friends just bought a P2 and hates it. He is a tall guy and never rode BMX much. He was looking for a more XC type bike. Whoever sold it to him must have been a quick talker. I rode the bike and liked it(given its intend purpose). I agree that the Pseries is a good transition bike for the BMX in you, but it depends on what style riding you plan on.

It's an excellent frame. Just pay attention to what everyone else said about the BMX style set up. It is a great bike if you are doing the riding it was designed for.

Coming from a BMX background, you'll like the P-Series. Most BMXers I know (being one myself) tend to constantly look for anything they can launch from. A little curb or a little mound of dirt will suffice. If you like to jump, then the P-Series is a good choice as well.
However, don't limit yourself to one brand. Check out other companies like KONA, Rocky Mountain and all the others.
Test ride as many different brands as you can.

I recently got a Giant STP 1. Cost about $1K, I think the STP2 is more in the $600.00 range.
So far I like it a lot, it is a blast.
I think it is similar type of Geometry as the P.1. I admit I know basically nothing about the componenets.
Depending on how you ride, you may find the geometry to lag a bit if you are planning on covering some milage, but I use my quick release seat adjust and don't have much of a problem, even on the street covering 10 or so miles. Surley you are not going to keep up with the roadies, but you will be right in there with the mild fitness group and the comfort bike group, no problem.
I have had mine on the trails a few times and had a blast messing around, ended up covering 12 off road miles before I really knew it.
I just did a mini-tri this weekend that included a 3-mile flat road bike ride. I kept up with the rec. group just fine, but could see how a more efficient peddaling position would help...but that is not what I bought the bike for...I think I was the only one hopping curbs and driveways in the bike event!

The Rockhopper is an excellent cross county choice. It is a great deal for the price.
