So what do LX, XC, etc. mean?

When I am shopping for new stuff I often see these terms afterwards. I only remember LX, XTR, and XC right now but I think there were more. Śre these some kind of rating or what.

Can someone list the different initials and a brief explanation of what each are for or the benifits of them.
