Disc Brakes

Real beginner question here...

Are either of these Disc brakes?

Shimano Deore XT
Avid SD-Mag

And what is the main benefit of disc brakes?

Sorry again for the real beginner question.

Shimano Deore XT is a brand...kind of like Toyota Supra.
Shimano offers both V-brakes and disc rotors in Deore XT.
I don't know much about Avid SD-Mag...that sounds like an old brake system to me.

There are a couple of advantages to riding disc....the main one being that they don't get all mucked up when you're riding in muddy conditions. They're also a lot easier to control and are more responsive.

I ask because the Shimano Deore XT brakes are on the Specialized Stumpjumper Pro M2 1998 and the Avid are on the 2000 model and was wondering if either of those are disc.

No neither of them are. Why are you looking at such old bikes?
