im prety sure that rose hill in kamloops. i went and took a look at it. and theres alot of a runout too it. i think he would be fine. but maybe its a different jump.

edit: yep its in kamloops. i guess it doesnt have as much of a runnout as i thought. still it must have been a brutal crash.

its really not that bad of a jump. he was just going a bit too fast, and a superman probobly wasnt the best idea at that time.

heres just one more pic of the jump. i remember looking at it and thinking it was a backflip jump. very steep lip.

Seems a bit off but shouldnt the height of the ramps be the same size? No wonder he overshot the tranny, look at the ratio of height to distance those ramps are.

watching the video, i think that was more of a weird late bail out attempt than a superman. he realised he was screwed after hitting the lip, let out that grunt. then it looked like he hesitated a bit before trying to pitch the bike.

personally, i think i would have tried to land it even without the tranny. either that or not wait so long before bailing.

i hope that guy's ok. looked like it really hurt.

Not that i know anything about freeriding, but wouldn't it have been safer to try to land while _on_ the bike, rather than bailing? The bike's suspension would presumably take a lot of the impact..

Then again, while sailing through the air and seeing your life flash before you, that might not be what you'd be thinking of...


Tell me again why people build and ride on these suicide structures?

a) the jump isn't that steep. Really thats pretty mellow as far as steepness goes.
b) a guy on nsmb.com said it best. HE shouldn't be trying to get air with speed but trying to pop off the top, so his air is more under his control
c) the guy broke some ribs and his jaw (all e-talk but the closest thing I could find to an injury report)
d) It is rose hill (or near there)
e) I wouldn't hit it. I don't have those kind of balls and dang it just looks sketchy haha. Did anyone notice it is a trail? There is another jump just down the hill a bit.

a) yep, I thought the same thing. The hill is steep, it would have hurt but I assume it would have been safer. It looks like he was mid ditch, thought to keep the bike but couldn't bring it back in. He was a pretty experienced rider but once he hit the air it probably got the better of him
b) this is a successful stunt by all account. Many experienced riders have hit it. Look at the ramp. Really well ridden trail. People crash freeriding, its the risk

That's pretty much what I was thinking. It's like it occurred to him as he was pushing clear of the bike that it had 7-8 inches of suspension, whereas he had none.

I think the utility of suspension in landing jumps is rather over-rated. The bike looks like an RMX so maybe he has 8" front and rear, plus maybe another foot or so knee-bend aborption depending on his seat height. A hiker just jumping down from a rock can absorb an impact probably over two or three feet worth of knee bending, more if you tuck and roll.

I see this misunderstanding manifested all the time when guys with FS bikes ride off drops to flat and just slam into the ground with their knees seemingly locked. And surprise, the bike breaks sooner or later.

Notice trials riders rarely use much suspension, but they so have very low seats, and drop with the front wheel nice and high to smooth out the landing even more.

In the crash seen on the video, the only advantage of trying to land a bike flat from that high up would be style points.

that reminds me of some of the freestyle walkers that can jump from like 15 feet up tuck and roll, and keep going.
