    Magura Marta vs. Marta SL's

I'm not sure how many people here are concerned about light weight brakes but I thought I would go ahead and post this anyway. Maybe it will save one person some money.

I have been running Magura Marta SL's for a couple of years now and overall I am pretty happy with them. However, lately I have been having problems with the levers sticking so I need to send them into Magura to have them worked on. I don't think they will give me any problems servicing them but I really don't want to go without my bike for a week or two while they have them. To avoid this problem I went ahead and ordered another set of brakes, this time I went with the regular Marta's. I figure it is a good idea to have an extra set of brakes plus I'm going to be building up a second bike in the future so I might as well have some nice brakes to go on it.

Anyway, I went ahead and compared the weights of the Marta's and the Marta SL's when I did the change.

The first picture is the front Marta. The second picture is the front Marta SL brake. Keep in mind it does have worn pads so add a gram or so to make up for that.

On the front brake comparison their is only a difference of 8 grams. That's not too bad considering that the Marta SL front brake costs $56 more than the Marta.
I may be fat but I'm slow enough to make up for it.

Now for the back brake comparison.

The first picture is the new Marta rear brake. The second is the older Marta SL. The older brake has worn pads and the hose has been cut down about eight inches.

The weight difference this time is only 6 grams. I would be willing to bet that if the hose on the SL had not been cut there would not be any weight difference. However I don't have anything to back that up.

Anyway, by switching to the regular Marta brakes my bike gained 14 grams. However if I had been paying retail I would have saved $112. This is based on the prices for the Marta's being $518 a set and the Marta SL's costing $630 a set.

Hope this helps out if someone is trying to make the decision between these brakes later on.
