Newbie needs help

Hi all - I'm new to the sport. A few friends have gotten me interested in mountain biking, specifically XC. Looking at bikes now and feel that I would like a hardtail with a max to spend of about $1000. I'm considering the Kona Caldera as an option, but have one friend pushing the GT Avalanche 0.5 because of the reviews it has gotten. Can anyone help me with comparing these to? I've ridden a few Konas and liked them (none were a Caldera, however) but no GTs as of yet. Is it worth checking into? Any other suggestions for a biker just starting? Thanks.

Of the two I would go with the Kona. However I would also check out Specialized, Giant and KHS. They all make some great hardtails around that price range.

He also forgo to mention that we have been pushing the ebay, route. his friends are a couple of bike snobs so we keep looking for Deans, Moots and IF bikes in the 1000$ range. We have had some success with this, but we are also comfortable getting a new bike covered in mud and needing to be repainted for 1200$. Can anyone give opinions to this approach?

So far I love it, I'm just not crazy about the Marzocchi Marathon SL fork I have on it. I will be doing my first 24 hour race on it this weekend so I will know for sure what I think about it next week sometime. I'm sure that at 3:00 am Sunday morning I will have all kinds of choice names for it.
