I've just had some gutting news. I was planning to shift my 2001 Pace RC-36 Pro Class forks over to my new Kona frame when it arrived. When I bought the forks (£500 at the time) I had a choice between a disc mount or canti bosses. I have been running v's but on the Kona intend to run discs. Being as Pace are a local firm I contacted them to arrange getting a disc mount put on and have been told that it can't be done. Therefore I need to buy some new forks for the new bike as well. I've got some old Marzocchi Z1's which could be used as a short term solution but they're heavier than I really want.

Does any have any experience of a good light weight fork? The frame is a 2004 Kona Explosif, which according to the specs is designed around an 80mm travel fork. Hence my RC-36s would have been just about perfect.

Opinions on what to go for?

A real good fork for a xc bike is the rock shox psylo sl/ u-turn

I am using a Rock shox SID, which is pretty much as light as it gets. I am very pleased with it. These things are sub 3lbs, and use air so you have a lot of adjustement possibilities. Also the lockout helps in climbs. Its only 80mm, but thats plenty for most XC. The only thing is that its not the strongest fork out there, i wouldnt want to be riding it if i was over 170, and/or if I was doing larger drops

You might want to check out the rock shox new Reba line of forks. You can get a 85mm travel version or a Uturn thats adjustable from 85-115mm. Also a minute 2 but it has 100 or 130mm preset travel which is 20mm more then your asking but it should work. They are both trail forks so they should both take a beating.
