Back from CO Trip WOW!
Had a great time in CO. We toured the entire state (just about!)
Here's a short breakdown of our itinerary and some comments:
Sat. left Sarasota, FL and drove straight through to Lawerence KS, to my sis's house.
Sun. Got to my sis's house in the morning and crashed for a couple of zzz's. Woke up ate lunch and took a tour of the town. Cool little town and Mass streets was super neat!
Mon. woke up and headed for Denver. Got into town around 5:00 pm and went out to eat and early to bed.
Tues. morn. got up and headed North to check out Ft. Collins. Cool place, funky college town and lots of neat areas. Reminded me of my hometown just in the mountains. From there we hit Loveland. Didn't know where we were going and wasn't all that impressed with what I saw, but figured we didn't know where to look. Either way we found our way heading toward Estes Park. Spent a couple of hours in E.P. What can you say of E.P. it's a tourist hotbed and everything was super expensive. Heck the normal $.59 tacos at Taco Bell were $.99. Needless to say we weren't that impressed and then went into Boulder. Boulder was way cool! Bikes everwhere and everyone was in incredible shape. Gorgeous people everywhere. You could tell the cost of living there was through the roof! Back to Denver to crash for the night!
Wed. woke up and headed out of town. Went into Golden to check out the area. Possible job in Golden so I wanted to see the area. Liked it. A lot! Lots of trails just outside of town and right behind where the office is. Pretty cool! From there we went SW to Buena Vista. Stopped for a potty break and a quick drive through. You gotta be into whitewater to live there! I liked the town though I'm not into WW, but would easily get into it! From there we went into Salida. Cruised through town and stopped at a couple of bike shops. Found a campground outside of town on a lake and spent the night!
Thurs. woke up, packed up the truck and went for a ride on the Rainbow trail. Cool trail, lots of up and down, but not super technical. Lots of fun though! The elevation and lack of O2 was killing us! Finished the ride, the headed out of town!
We stopped at a Ranger Station and asked about the fires in Durango (Next Planned Stop), decided against it and went towards Gunnison and Crested Butte. Found another campsite on a lake and spent the night!
Thurs. thru Sun. were spent in Crested Butte and surrounding areas. CB was awesome! I'd love to move there, but work seemed limited! Bikes were everywhere. Fortunately, we hit CB during their Fat Tire Festival, and although we didn't take part, we enjoyed some of the festivities. Did some riding, had some fun, met a lot of neat people(Nate, John, Hank)...etc. Got to see our first DH race on Sunday. Way Cool! Would move there in an instant if a job were available. Sunday afternoon we headed out of town and towards Durango. (Found out the fires weren't affecting anything significant in town!)
Left CB and then made our way to Durango through Montrose, Ourey, Silverton and then into town. That drive was spectacular!
Some some effects of the fires on the mt. ranges into town and could see some smoke. Ate dinner in town and did some tourist shopping! Spent the night at another campground on a lake (of course!) just outside of Purgatory!
Mon. went back into town and spent the morning being tourists in town. Hit a couple of bike shops and found out where the good riding was!
Headed out and toward Telluride. Didn't care much for Telluride. Seemed kinda snobbish! But it is a resort town afterall! Didn't stay long and kept going! Ended up staying the night on the Grand Mesa. You guessed it, at a campground on a lake!
Tues. morning headed out and toward Grand Junction and then Fruita. Didn't like GJ at all! Major retirement area. Lots of bluehairs in big cars! Flat and Hot! The downtown was very pretty though! The main street meandered back and forth and there were lots of trees and a lot of activity! Fruita was a dissapointment. Not what I expected and the only place where the bike shop people weren't very friendly! Maybe it was a bad day or maybe I was just tired! From there we hit Vail, Frisco, Brekenridge, Copper and Keystone. Decided to camp between Brekenridge and Keystone! Believe it or not, NOT on a lake!
Woke up Weds and headed to Keystone for some chairlift riding. Spent the entire day going up and down via Gondola! Saw a big deer on one of the trails and a bear! Just got down to the bottom and a bunch of people were pointing up the slope! A big brown bear went into the trail where we were just riding! Way cool!
Thurs. woke up and headed back to Denver. Had wedding things to do Thurs and Fri. Then woke up Sat and headed home!
All in all it was a blast! Didn't ride as much as I hoped, but enjoyed the times we did ride! Confirmed my desire to move out there! Hopefully soon!
