What type of bike is right for me?
I'm 50 years old. I don't know alot about bikes. I don't know what an XC or a Freeride is. I've been riding for about a year. I ride between 30 and 40 miles a week, mostly on paved trails. My current bike is a Shwinn Sierra GS.
I want a bike that will do some offroad but I want it to be comfortable for 20 mile road trips.
I have around $ 700 to spend. I was thinking about a Giant STP because of their advertising but I really don't have a clue.
Help.

I wouldn't get an STP, those are more designed for freeride/street... eg, dirt jumps, skate parks, drops/hucks.
You could get the most expensive Specialized Hardrock, the Pro Disc, for about $650 or less I think.
If you don't really plan on getting into freeriding, it might be better to get more of a cross country bike, it'd be lighter and a little better to pedal uphill and for long distances.

Thanks,
I checked out the Specialized Hardrock. I think it's just what I need. Do you know of any other comparable bikes?

I like all kinds of bikes, but if I was to have one kind of bike, it would be one of these two types. And it's relatively easy, with a little self-education, to find them used and save some money. And when September comes, these bikes are typically on sale at bike shops.
best of luck
