It depends a little bit on what you're looking for. If you're just getting into mountain biking and looking for a dependable ride, Trek, Gary Fisher (actually owned by Trek), and Giant are all good choices. Norco and Rocky Mountain tend to focus more on their downhill lines and market towards serious riders.

Trek-I trust nothing they make. Norco-I swear by them. Giant-Very nice freeride line-up IMO (droool...Faith). Rocky Mountain-Same as giant. Gary Fisher-Dont really know much about them, seem to be strong in the XC line-up. Marin-Good overall company IMO.

I'd say
1. giant/norco
2. rocky mountain
3. Marin
4. Trek
5. Gary Fisher (owned by trek)
But it all depends on what you want and what type of riding you do.

I find it interesting that trek is usually so low. Ok depend on what this is for it would change, for FR/DH this is my order (I might add, two of what would be my top 3 are not there, so these would never be my primary choices)
1) Norco
2) RM
3) Giant & Trek
Marin and Gary fisher aren't even on my radar. Neither companies, regardless of who owns them, make bikes that impress me. In reality here are my top 5
1) Specialized
2) Kona
3) Norco
4) Giant and Trek (both companies have current offerings that impress me, long term results will show more imo)

Never mind rating companies - none of those bike will fall apart beneath you. Test ride bikes you like, and make your decision from there... Gary Fishers are great if you're tall. Specialized are really sturdy. Cannondales are made in PA. Lance rides Trek - but he's a roadie...
Get what feels good to you, because you'll be the one riding it, regardless of anyone else's opinion... unless you're just after a status symbol ...

No way you can rate these companies with regard to quality. They've all got top of the line bikes and bottom of the barrel bikes, so they might rank differently at different price points. For instance, Marin's low-end bikes are pieces of poop sold at major outdoor retailers, but I'd put my top-of-their-hardtail-line Pine Mountain up against any Trek, Giant or GF hardtail.
Norco I don't know enough about.
Rocky Mountain might be my favorite on the list because they've got some nice hand-made frames in their line-up, but you'll pay for it. Take similarly spec'd bikes from each company, and the Rocky is going to be somewhat pricier from what I've seen.

This is fun
1) Marin
2) Norco
3) The rest
Although, for the same price range IMHO you'll get very similar bikes (quality, durability...).
That's the beauty of a competitive market in a imperialistic world
I orignally rode Marin as it was the only bike you coud get in the UAE in the mid 90's. Now I ride Norco as a friend had one and they're Canadian
