Tires for Wet/Slippery Roots and Rocks
Where I'm living it's been a wet wet wet (and humid!!!) 2005! The woods are full of glazed large rocks and simey off-camber roots...I need the right tire combo. I can't run anything bigger than a 2.25, though. I think ZI found a front tire that I like (the Schwalbe Albert Front only Snakeskin) but I haven't found a back tite yet I like in these conditions...what do you guys and gals like???

I was about to totally own you for not searching due to an extremely similar thread title but the noob in the other thread(ha! I called him a noob) wanted studded tires.
Now, I can offer no useful input on this subject so I will leave you with this:
Willy Wonka loves candy.
Thanks

The knobbiest MTB tire you can get, with the pressure dropped down to about 20-30psi. It will suck on the road, but roll right over anything in its path. You might want to keep a pump or c02 handy to pump them back up once you get on the road or good trail.
Good luck.

Throw the stick!!!!
I just ordered a new wheelset and tires specifically for muddy or rooty races. We seem to have a lot of that around here. Anyway, I went with classics that have been around forever. I ordered a Panaracer Dart for the front wheel and a Panaracer Smoke for the rear wheel. I haven't used the Smoke for over ten years so I am really looking forward to riding it again. The rolling resistance will suck but they are very meaty tires so should do very well for their intended purpose.
Here are the tread patterns of the two. The smoke is the first one, dart second.

Take a look at these SwampThing
The freeride version comes in a 2.35 and the xc is a 2.1. Maxxis however runs on the smaller side. I would get the 42a compound, run a dh tube with psi in the low to mid 20's. You will still slip and slide over roots and rocks that are wet but not as much as with other tires. I would suggest taking the tires of, if you go with a 42a, as soon as it dries up a bit because they will wear out fast.

I normally use Maxxis Ignitors for my local trails which have their share of roots and rocks, for really wet I ride Hutchinson Mosquitos. Stay away from the skinny Mosquitos, they don't grab as well as the fat ones.

Well--it rained locally last night and at 5:05am I tested out a new back tire...seems the front was also the answer for the rear..I ran the Schwalbe Albert 2.25 snakeskin front and rear today..hook up was quite impressive even on some long slimy rounded log bridgges. I think I might have found the right combo at last...so search this
