Moving to Oakland CA
I'm moving to Oakland CA for two years and need to know what you guys would reccommend in terms of an "unbreakable lock" for high crime areas. My shiny new Gary Fisher will most likely make bike thieves drool with greed. I should probably use a series of locks, but am unsure which ones would be best. Thanks.

if you have a basement put it in there. when my bike is not being ridden, or cleaned, it is on the basement. it is also better there becasue it doesnt collect dust and stuff in the garage.
forget that if you are living in an apartment, i would put it in the apartment.

Most poeple tend to like this strategy the best:

As for locks, the Kryptonite Mini U-Lock and the New York chain.
Those would be best, Oakland is a sketchy area....

I agree with joe pozer. Unless you have your eyes on it, it might be gone. I don't think that there is any lock on earth that the thieves have not figured out how to open in just a few seconds. I know one owner of a bike shop that says the more locks the better, because they will tend to pass over bikes that look like they will take a long time in favor of those that only have one lock. He doesn't even use locks when he takes his bikes out in his truck-he just uses about 50 bungee cords to strap them all together in a giant bungee-bike knot! I don't think I will try that myself, though. The bottom line is, if a thief sees it, and wants it, he will probably get it if you leave it unattended, no matter what lock(s) you have. I love my Fishers, and keep my eyes on them when they are out of the stable.
You might try looking at a police auction for a commuter bike. I picked up a Fisher Big Sur in rideable condition at a college campus police auction for less than $75. This bike had been previously stolen (the serial # scrubbed off) and then confinscated by the police when it was abandoned. I'm sure someone still misses that bike! It is one of my family's favorites now. Good luck!

I live in oakland, ride my bike all over, and have yet to have it stolen. I usually just run a mini-u through the back wheel and run a cable from that through the front wheel and frame.
SF's probably more likely to steal your bike than poor old oaktown, honestly.
