Anyone here ever ride trials?
There aren't any trails around my town, and I'm really not much of a fan of riding in skateparks and such, but there are plenty of benches and little ledges and things that could make for good beginner trials riding.
I was thinking that a trials bike might be fun when I'm stuck around town and don't have time to drive to any decent trails, and I'm sure that it'd really help a LOT with my bike handling skills.
Anyone ride trials? Does it help with your mountain biking?

I do. I guess it helps with mountain biking, bike control, confidence etc, but not hugely. Trials is really technical, with a fairly slow learning curve. It's very different from freeride, or riding trails which are both much faster and smoother. Trials is all about doing moves really well, getting them dialed. I think it's one form of the progression of bikes and riding at it's max. It started with people riding thier XC bikes, and has progressed hugely to insane moves, and the use of bikes which would be, to be honest, completely useless in any other disapline.
Great fun though

I tried
I fell a lot
I sucked
I stopped
I don't ride trials...
Trials is extremely helpful in north shore riding. Very short 'flowy' (in a north shore kind of way) technical trails. Otherwise, I have not found much use for it outside of street

Trials can help you navigate over objects on the trail though it usually isn't worth the effort and if you're going fast, then bunnyhopping can be risky (hit/lodge your back wheel, OTB you go). However, it's fun but has a really slow learning curve.

Trials is mainly what I work on when I'm out riding, but I can't do very much yet. I can only bunny hop a bit over a foot, can't manual more than maybe 25 feet, etc
I can do pivots OK though, they're easy

I just got into trials this year and I am loving it. WHen I went and rode some really technical CC trails I noticed how much it helped with navigating obsitcals. Trails lets me become one with my bikes. If you have the money go out and buy a used trials bike. Definatly a rad obsession.
