Sorry but another noob here

Hey all. i know there are alot of noobs asking about bikes but i couldn't find anything about strictly mountain biking for a beginner. im also 21 so i wanna take advantage of my young age . i want a bike that can take a beating. obviously i will be on trails to see what i like and such but i expect as i get better to go on rough terrain, go up and down hills and hit roots logs whatever is around. it just looks so fun. not for riding around town. anyhow went to local shop and they said 600 and up for hard tail and 1000 and up for full susp. is a good start for a decent bike. canadian currency that is. only one i could remember was the chilli pepper that i saw. there was a few he showed me. im going to rent as well but just wanted to know what direction to go in? i would spend about 1200 american dollars. around there anyhow. thats like 1500 can? also may upgrade as i go. ill find that out when i know more. anyhow any help is appreciated. oh and im in ontario. nothing to hard core im sure like BC or fancy places in the states but still wanna take the sport to the max one day. thanks for any future replies.

1200 USD is more lik 1650 CAD. Any bikes you see listed on sites as 1000 USD will be about 1300-1400 CAD. Prices are higher here.

well, for the most part, the stuff you can do is determined by the engine, not the bike, but if you want a nice mountain bike, you can pick up a decent hardtail at that price. stay away from full suspension; I don't think you'd be satisfied with the component level at that price range (read: sh*t will break). If you want to spend 1000 USD, or so, check out the rockhopper comps. It's a good bike for the money. Plus you'll have some money left over for the oft-forgotten accessories.
