yay for the front, mud in the eyes not all stings, it can make you fall, thus busting your bike, no good. nay for the back, how else will people know where you've been? besides, muddy backs are like camo in the woods. get ahead of your buddies on the trails and then peel into the woods and hide. you have no idea how funny it is to watch them ride by you and then stop and wonder where the hell you went.

To answer the question I use Topeak DeFenders on my commuter bike when the weather sucks, but I don't bother off road

First: Thank you for your useful replies. You're obviously very knowledgeable and provide a lot of good information.

Second: I'm not going to quote your message since it is directly above mine and in most other forums I visit, it's considered poor ettiquette to post images such as your that unnecessarily use bandwidth and don't relate to the topic on hand.

Third: I've read my terms and conditions of use and the forum guidelines and I can't find anything prohibiting so-called AOLese or TXTSPK.

Fourth: What I did find were sections relating to Respectfulness and Harrassment. You might want to take a look at those and I can clearly see you were calling me and idiot. I clearly am not.

Fifth: I'll not respond on this topic in this thread any longer. You can PM me if you like as that is the appropriate place for this type of thing. You took your shot at me publicly and I'm taking one chance to defend myself. 'nuff said

[/hijack thread] Thx

Having dirt fly up to your mouth for a quick taste isn't great. I don't like the look of fenders, but they've got a purpose and that is what counts.

I use fenders for when I'm riding to work. Showing up for your job with a big streak up your back isn't the best idea.

However, I take them off when I'm going on trails.

I too use mudguards for road/commuting. Never really got on with them off road.

Turning up soaking wet for 8 hr of work isn't nice but returning home muddy isn't so bad.
Most mtb mudguards are useless compared to traditional full length mudguards. They add weight, get knocked about and can break.

Disruption
Posts which intend to disrupt the topic of conversation or steer the topic away from the focus of the forum and related news. Disruption can include harassment, multiple user profiles, multiple posting of the same post and posting completely off topic messages. Please do your best when it comes to grammar, punctuation and spelling. Excessive use of "AOL'ese" and "hAx0r" talk can be very disruptive so please keep it to a minimum.
You won't get away with using it here at all as far as I'm concerned. Once it starts it just gets worse and worse until there's nothing but moronic gibberish everywhere you look. (Look at the BMX section for an example)

Actually if I wanted to call you an idiot I would with no hesitation. I'd come right out and say it.
I did however attack your use of a bastardized abbreviation commonly used by illiterate 12 year old AOL'ers.
We do have standards of communication here: AOL'ese is a hybrid of "1337" (read hacker language) and abbreviations devised by slow typists to keep up with real time chat sessions. It doesn't belong here where you have all the time you need to type out a understandable, intelligent looking response.

This forum is visited by THOUSANDS of people a day. Some are members, MOST of them are guests who are looking for someplace where they can ask a question and get an intelligent response. "I wud git dat b4 u 4get or ur gunna be srry thx" Is NOT an intelligent looking response no matter how correct the information (once translated) is.

You want others to respect your opinions? Type them so anyone can read them not just "ur homies" I don't expect perfect spelling and grammar. Hell half the time I ignore people who can't capitalize ( that irks me too).

As for whether or not you actually are an idiot remains to be seen. I do tend to give people the benefit of the doubt until they continue to exhibit the same behavior after being advised against it

BIG FAT EDIT 08-19-05, 02:53 AM

It's pretty sad that you either
  1. Feel the need to log in as a seperate user in a petty attempt to annoy me
    or
  2. Have some associate of your's PM me in order to try to insult me.

Either way now these juvinile tactics won't end well for you.
    It's in admin's hands now.

Ahh you understand the concept, however you forget what happens to the right hand man in a sucessful empire.
Steps of minion recruitment
  1. Hire a bunch of minions
  2. Watch as they battle for rank
  3. Kill the #1 minion as an example (It's always the right hand man or the love interest that betrays you)

You forgot several gallons of liquid LSD, and several pounds of crack cocaine. Which is for you, and which is for the minions is the key to a successful empire. Choose wisely.

Tsk tsk. Why would I bother with Columbian cocaine products when Afghan heroin is so much more profitable? Especially since the cartels are so well entrenched. As for the LSD that could indeed prove useful in a fiendish plot.

Thx is not "THX" so lighten up.

Excessively uptight scolding should be avoided, along with overuse of punctuation to hide a limited vocabulary

So what is the thread about, anyway?

I use a fender on my DH bike if it is really muddy, mud on goggles in a race run or in or eyes is not a good thing. Another way of "making" a fender which is very effective, but a bit ugly is to put a piece of tube between your arch and lower crown (only works with DC forks)

Here is an example, last race around 50% of riders were running a tube or similar as demonstrated below or were running fenders

Wow, just joined and was reading through the forums - found this topic and was interested as I have begun riding my bike to work and was considering fenders myself.

I say wow, because it seems like people have their panties in a bunch over someone's use of thx. Let's get a grip folks, its not like he killed someone.

Having said that, I think its funny that the folks most upset by his use of thx, are using nonsensical words like AOLese.

Not a great way to build community IMHO. So with that, I say WTF is wrong with asking someone nicely not to use TXT SPK, rather than posting a picture in an effort to flame him. This whole thing probably would have been better handled via PM rather than flaming the guy in the open forum. IIRC, its bad form to be abusive to people - or at least that's what I thought I read in the rules when I signed up.

Finally, since I'm a n00b, let me just say OMFGHI2U!

Okay, then. I guess I'll post on-topic.... Um, I voted 'yay' because I run a quick release fender on the back of my FS. Makes it easier on my car seat since I frequently get muddy. Don't mind a little mud in the eye, nose or mouth. I'll probably just wind up taking the fender off soon, anyway. Not too much need for it lately.
