Whoa.. Almost 5K for a bike...? I probably would have it put in glass and displayed somewhere like the living room myself. Am curious on how a high-end feels and I'm sure I'd want to throw out the one I have now. Only testing the bike out can one really know if it's a good deal or not. I would think it would have to be flawless since someone spending that much wouldn't mind spending the extra couple hundred dollars to get a brand new bike. IMO..

I'm assuming that you own or manage a bike shop? If so, can't you hook up your buddy a bit better than that? Or, are you concerned about Jeopardizing your relationship with your vender? Since it's your bud, why not give him the best deal you can? If you're concerned about the vender getting upset, just explain that you can't go any lower for this reason. I think it's a reasonable discount, but not a fantastic deal. I don't own any bikes of this caliber, though. I guess when you figure in no tax and free shipping, it starts to look more attractive. More like a 25% discount. That is a good deal. He might not have a problem with discount per se, but I think I'd be a bit timid before dropping $4,600 on a bike too. Go with your gut.

Throw the stick!!!!
Is the bike being bought straight from the bike shop or from you as an individual? Personally if I was not going to be the original owner I personally would not pay that much money for the bike.
Do you work at the shop? If so you know what the cost is on the bike and you know what retail is. That would be a good way to determine if it is a good deal or not.
Other than that I guess in order to rate it a good deal or not would completely depend on how your friend likes the bike. I demo'ed an epic for a couple of weeks and it didn't work for my riding style. Others ride them and love them. It all depends on the rider.

Well it's not exactly what I would consider a smoking deal, especially on a bike that will shortly be last years model. It is a decent deal though. Personally I wouldn't feel the need to jump on it though, especially knowing that a lot of shops will be dropping the price on the 05's shortly.
Like I said, if the guy is in love with the bike it is a great deal. If he is indifferent on it then it's really not that great of a deal at all. When spending that kind of money on the bike you had better be crazy about the bike.

Don't forget... $4600 INCLUDING tax would be - for example in a 5% tax state - is $4381 for the bike. Shipping... what, another say, $81? So now the bike's going for basically $4300 bucks. Does that make it a better deal for some of you guys? Based on the $5500 price, it would be about a 22% discount if you were paying taxes and shipping.
I suppose your friend might possibly be able to get a slightly better deal if he were to work at it some, but if he knows you and trusts you... I'd rather buy from a friend, personally.
Sounds like an OK deal to me.
