a few questions about gears/chainguide etc.

hey guys, i'm a newbie so i apologize in advanced for any stupid questions.

anyway, i have a trek bruiser 1 and i was wondering if it were possible for me to change the front ring to just a single ring? i believe there are 3 front rings and 8 rear rings. i don't want to go singlespeed because sometimes i change gears to go up really steep hills. but i also realize, i hardly change gears at all. is there such thing as maybe 1 front ring and 3 rear rings? that way i only need to switch a few gears? i'm sorry if this sounds really stupid. i have no idea how it works.

as for my second question... what do you guys do about getting your pants caught in the gears when riding? i wear shorts usually but as the weather gets colder, i'll be wearing jeans. the thing is, my jeans are not tapered so they tend to get caught if i don't tuck them in my socks or clip them. would a bashguard or chainguide help? one that doesn't look stupid?

i have one last and final question. my seatpost is a quick release so how do i lock it? the cable i bought to wrap around the front wheel doesn't fit into the little hole under the seat. can you guys link me to something i can buy to change the seatpost from a quick release into a normal one?

thanks for the help.

I run a 1x9 gear setup (single ring in front with 9 in the rear) with a e13 bashguard on my P.1, works well though the chain will drop off the front inside on occasion. Hasn't been a safety issue at all, just annoying. The bashguard will keep your pants from getting sucked into the chainring too.

Gears I'm running are a 12-25 cassette with a 32 tooth chainring in the front, haven't found a trail that it doesn't work well on.

Your local bike shop should have a seat collar with a bolt that will fit your bike, or at least be able to order one.

how would you fix the problem with the chain dropping off? is it because it stresses when the back is shifted to the outside or inside instead of middle?

is it possible to have a 1 x 6 setup or so? i don't think i actually need 9 rings in the back.

i heard the e13 is great, but it only works if you have a single setup in front right?

you can run 6 rings, but you would have spacers in the rear and you chain would shift onto them and that would be bad... its ok to have gears you dont use.

okay thanks guys.

i'm going to go to my lbs and ask them what i have to do to make it a 1x8 setup. on top of that i'll buy the e13 chainguide.

is that the best chainguide i can get? i don't know anything about them. i want a nice looking one, preferably in black.

oh, can you tell me (roughly) how much it would cost to change it from a triple front to a single? and how much would that chainguide be?

i'm trying to figure out an estimated amount of money i need before i even go to the lbs to have them do it.

The Truvativ chainguide will protect your pants without a bashring...it also offers a wide range of adjustment to accomodate different size chainrings. It's also one of the least expensive, but it's noisier than MRP or E.13 if that matters to you.

120 sounds good.

i've decided on just getting a bashguard or bashring or whatever it's really called and changing the front to just 1 ring.

what size ring should the front be? is there just a default size they will convert it to or will they ask me what size i want? if they ask, i wouldn't know what to say.

as for the bashguard, is the e13 supercharger okay? anything better for the same price? so far i found it for 30 bucks.

https://www.pricepoint.com/detail/143...Bash-Guard.htm

for choose size it says 44T. i'm guessing that's the size front ring i want to convert to...

sorry for all the questions but i have another one.

i called my lbs about the above, and they said they can have it done in a day, but only if i choose to go with a race face bash ring instead of the e13 because they would have to order the e13.

what should i do? is the e13 better? will the race face be just as good?

I had a 3x8 setup on my Hardrock until a fateful day when I had a fairly big crash and sandwiched part of the 3 chainrings together. I had to get a new crankset, and I decided to get a Race Face bashring (which meant additional protection for ditching the big ring which I never even used anyway). So far, so awesome, looks great, feels great, the metal is a tiny bit soft but excellent and I'd highly reccomend it. And now my long trousers don't get caught in the crankset. Not sure about the weight, don't care either.

Hope it helped. Here's a picture:

i guess if they both will help my pants from getting caught in the ring, and they're both of same quality, then i will just get the race face so i can get it done asap.

A chainguide holds tension on the chain to keep it from dropping to the inside... I don't have one, thus my chain drops. My e13 bashguard protects my pants, my chainring and keeps my chain from dropping to the outside. You can keep your current crankset and just leave on your middle ring for a 32t gear... the e13 bashguard comes with bolts designed to be long enough to go through the chainguide and one gear. Remove the big outer ring and put the bashguard and new bolts in its place. Easy enough.

I've seen it written on trials sites that a true bashguard is actually bolted to the frame, like on a mod trials bike, and seldom found on mtb's.

A bashring is exactly that.

Get an E.13 Supercharger, you won't be disappointed.
