Specificly clueless

Now that summer is over I have some money and I want a real bike. Im stepping up from a bmx bike and have done some mountain biking, borrowing reanting and such, so I kind of know what I want but at the same time this whole area of sport is very new to me. Basicly I have about 700 bucks and I was looking at Kona hardtails, but I need some imput. The bike will be used for a lot of different things, mostly tansportation on steets but I ride hard and don't think a road bike owuld work too well. So anything would be a good help. Even telling me I'm wrong is fine, I just feel a bit lost by the vastness of it all.

specialized hardrock

it's a beefy XC -ish bike, and it will get you around town good, it'll take some stairs, that kinda thing. nothing too extreme, but does a lot of things pretty good. 700 bucks will get you one.

Norco Wolverine. Cheap. Strong. And really good. It'll be able to handle anything that you would throw at it I'm guessing. I own one and I don't have any problems with it.

Actually 700 bucks could come really close to getting you two.

You people are missing what he's saying!!!!!!!!!!! He comes from a bmx background. You need a Specialized P.2 or any P series bike. A Hardrock is a good trail bike to start with and a Stumpjumper is outright stupid. You'll break that! A P.2 will run you about 800 bucks and the geometry is as close as possible to what you're used to. Go test ride one and you'll love it.

I like the way this guy thinks. Ya its about 700 american so i might have to shop around a bit for P.2

you suggestions are exactly what I'm looking for. Right now I'm just wondering does this website have some unwritten rule against Kona's or are they just too expensive for the name kinda thing?

Actually Konas are usually regarded fairly highly around here. You'll find that the most unsugested bikes are probably Treks. The Kona bikes are very good from what I've heard, but your best bet would definitely be with the Specialized P-series bikes considering you BMX background. I'd give you a link but apparently they changed their address.

Ya, I second that. Kona's are great bikes also. They're just a little more costly than some companies...but you still get quality.

"The bike will be used for a lot of different things, mostly tansportation on steets..."

Yeah, I have to agree, dirtyamerican....
Riding a bike for transportation on streets is absolutely HELL on a bike, huh?
I see bikes broken everywhere from simply riding them down the streets....

Wanna try and break something, try a Haro Escape.
They're relatively cheap, and come straight from a strong BMX history company....

Well, I like to mess around a lot on my bike (jumping and such) on my way from point a to point b and that is why a road bike is out. Plus my friend wants to start going to some trails near where I live.

On different note, I looked at the P.2's online (still trying to find a dealer near me to ride one) and they look like the a small front gear (sorry, I dont know the terminology) will that be a problem if I am trying to use it to get around town as well as for recreational riding?

I'm not sure if the P.2 is singlespeed or not, but if it has gears on the back you should be fine for just getting around. The front gear is likely a 32 tooth gear which will be fine for what your doing. No speed demon but no FR bike is. If you plan on riding trails you might want to check out the Konas as well. They will be better for the trails while still being very FR oriented.

Thanks revmoneky. I would have looked myself but the specialized site typically causes my computer to lock up for some reason.

Get a Brooklyn Machine Works Park Bike. Strong as hell and the Shin Burger pedals double as a bottle opener.

That looks to be a bit out of my price range

So are these bikes I'm looking into really specialized (p.2, bruiser, Kona stuff)? None of my lbs have them
