Brand New to Riding
Hi,
I would really love to get into Mountain Biking. I used to ride BMX and im sure the two are nothing alike. Anyways I have never owned a Mountain Bike. I was wondering if I could get some quick advice on how to start out and a good bike to buy. I dont want to buy a very expensive bike because im not sure if I will love it. I also dont want to buy a cheap bike that I will end up replacing in a month. So I was wondering if someone could maybe gove me an idea of what bike to get for maybe around $500? |

I'm sure I'll get pelted with broken derailleurs and beaten senseless with an old Rock Shox Quadra 21R for saying it, but if you are a BMXer you might want to check out the Redline Monocog. It's a steel framed single speed mountain bike with no suspension at all. Kind of like a big BMX bike. A mountain bike that costs under $500 is not going to work very well at all anyway, so why waste money on gears that don't shift and a suspension fork that just bounces up and down like a slinky? Most single speed mountain bikers get there via the long way, but you can short circuit the whole thing and go straight to one gear nirvana.

Buy a good "used" bike Man. Sure, you may have to replace some of the components in a few weeks/months, but it's still cheaper than a $1000-1500 bike, huh?

I think the Redline Monocog is a good option. Extremely tough frame, with big BMX bike geometry. I put a lot of BMX'ers on Hardrocks over the years too. Same deal there.

You can probably already guess this but, after a thorough reading of the $500 dollar thread- go to the LBS(s) and see what feels best for you, be it big BMX/MTB or a good ol' MTB.

id say get the hardrock...but they are right.. you need to go try a few bikes out and find the one you like the best... bacause no matter what other people say... your still the one riding it.
