Hi folks, new here. Hailing from Germany, (I'm American) and getting back in the saddle after a few years out of it. I've got a 95 or 96 (cant remember) Stumpy FS M2, and would like some advice on some upgrades, since its got about a decade under its belt. In truth, the bike was only ridden a total of no more than 2 years worth of mostly light trails so its pretty fresh. No abuse.

Now that I'm riding it again, I've already changed tires, added riserbar, and avatar gel seat (to make it a bit more comfy since i split a disk in my back a couple years ago). Im wondering what you all think about suspension seat posts, like the Crane Creek Thudbuster. Those who know the M2 know the frame is a HARDtail in the truest sense, and i was considering a post to take the edge off. But i dunno if i should get the short or longer travel one. Im actually afraid the longer one will put me in a wierd riding position when fully compressed. Any experiences with this?

Next thing is brakes. I have the original LX canti's on there and wondering if i should upgrade to v-brakes. What do you think? You have to change your levers too, right? Also, would it be wierd to run disc front and rim brake in the back? Recommendations?

Last thing is the fork. I've got the original Mag21 on there and its feeling pretty sticky and generally non compliant on small stuff. I heard that its a pain to get em rebuilt nowadays. I might consider a new fork but after reading so many reviews, dunno whats best. I know i need a shorter traver fork if i opt for a new one. 80mm seems to be the shortest out there. Anyway, Im looking for a light fork that rides plush, but one thats reliable, because i dont want to have to overhaul it often. Problem is, the ones that seem to fit my criteria are damned pricey. Fox f80 RLT, Marz marathon race, for example. I really dont wanna spend more than around 400. Suggestions?

If you have back problems they might make your ride more comfy. Why not just get a recumbent?


No, a lot of people run that setup. I have that setup on a bike. Keep in mind that a majority of your braking power is from your front brake anyway.

I prefer FOX FORX but as you mentioned they are out of your budget

If you get a 2005 fork (as the 2006 models are already out) you can pick up a really good fork right now for under $400

You will want to stick with 80mm fork for your frame.
