Well I bought a 05 stumpjumper and everything from brakes to deraileurs was not tuned properly. Today my chain broke because the masterlink was not set either.

You obviously don't understand the problem. Incorrect brake, chain, front and rear deraileur installation is human error. A master link pin that is not clipped in properly is not mechanical error, its the intallers. Mal-adujusted brakes are not the bike's fault, they are the installers. Front and rear deraileurs that need adjustment to work 10 minutes after I purchase the bike and the mechanic "tunes" the bike are once again not the bike's problem.

Whoops, should have bought it from the LBS. Why dont you take it back to supergo and have them fix it?
1 There is no way to put a master link on incorrectly
2 Yes a broken link could F up your front and rear derailleur.

I'm bringing it back tomorrow for chain replacemeant (possibly rear deraileur also). The reason I did not support my LBS is because they did not have the bike and could not order an 05 and suggested I go to the Supergo. It is just frustrated to buy a new bike that simply does not work.

Be careful what you say in forums. Unless you are prepared to prove what you said in a court of law is true (and pay all the costs that go with it), you might want to re-phrase your comment. Supergo would see this as slander. I know, I've been there before; not with Supergo, but with a car dealership and it wasn't pretty.

I would say that the employees at super go are definatley not the most knowledgeble people in the industry. A master link can cause a chain to break if not installed correctly, or pin error. I have had it happen to me.

I don't understand how the chain failed. What do you mean by masterlink? I'm assuming its a Shimano chain (looking at the Spec website) where a special rivet needs to be used to connect the chain. Doesn't sound like it could be a SRAM, a Powerlink would just come apart (BTW that's happened to me before). Since you adjusted the front derailleur, it seems like you would have noticed that one of the rivets was protruding too far out on either side. The bike shop should have noticed it during their tuneup also. I've seen a couple chains break with a seemingly small amount of force, but in all cases, it was after it was already abused from chain suck or continued use with a misadjusted front derailleur.

I've found forums a good way to voice problems with dealers. Luckily haven't had any run-ins. I had a problem with a Saab that I bought and had horrible customer service, and I made sure that everyone heard about it.

Same goes with bikes - if Supergo doesn't do a good job taking care of customers, I would want to know so I coudl avoid purchasing it. I guess you are right there could be costs, but as long as he isn't lying - truth is a vindicator in slander cases.

Freedom of Speech, Dude.... Ever heard of it?
If a company sux, then it sux (Kinda like Trek & their so called "lifetime" frame warranty). Just ask my brother, he should've took them to court. They didn't honor a broken frame on his road bike....

Trek Sux, period.

Freedom of speech, gee thanks, that is the first I have ever heard of it.
However, slander is illegal. One would have to pay all the legal fees to prove their point-- even if it was true. I almost went there once so was just trying to help someone to avoid what I went through.
But we really appreciate the smart @$$ comments "dude", they add a lot to the discussion.

Be careful, freedom of speech is a two way street. I have both Trek and Specialized bikes. So far so good to include warranty claims. I know several people who have made claims with Trek/Gary Fisher and have had frames replaced, even multiple times w/ no questions asked. So in my view they don't suck. And Trek has a reputation for replacing frames even though their warranty explicitly states its for manufacturer defects. So my first thought is what did your brother do to the bike? I would say you're not telling the whole story or perhaps you don't have all the details. Thus, I don't find you opinion here very credible.

Don't take it personal, I'm trying to make a point here. Sure, I believe you're brother could have had a valid claim. But your opinion as expressed here does not sway me from my personal experience and those of close friends. Or even the general concensus of those on this forum. So I say BS.

Buying a bike from Supergo doesn't mean it's always going to be messed up. You can easily walk out of a LBS with a goofed up bike - it's a crap shoot. Personally, I've never bought a complete bike from a bike shop, I've always bought a frame and built it up myself, learning how to assemble and maintain every part of the bike along the way. But if I did buy a whole bike - I gotta tell ya, I'd be going over that thing with a fine tooth comb anyway, and tweaking everything. I guess I have low expectations. I'd expect things to be out of whack on the assembly.

Isn't that the main reason an average customer goes to a bike shop instead of walmart though, to get a properly aasembled bike? With a 100+ percent markup, the least they could do is assemble the damn thing so it doesn't fall apart under you. If everything is out of whack, even the most expensive components will fail almost as fast as cheap junk on a huffy clunker.

IANAL, but I'm fairly sure that saying "Supergo sucks" is obviously an opinion and therefore hard for someone to press charges against. Especially since nbgrom's context is the bike that he bought. The implication is that SuperGo sucks at putting his bike together. Also, you probably mean the general term of defamation, since slander is usually verbal, while libel is written or broadcast.

The comments that would be easier to consider defamation, (but are actually more common), would be "My LBS can't put a bike together correctly." It's a statement posing as fact. "My LBS sucks at tuning bikes." is closer to a gray area because informal verbage "sucks" connotates opinion rather than fact, but the meaning is obvious.

Basically, it comes down to whether the statement has a negative effect, how many people it reaches, how strongly its worded, and whether is provable/disprovable. There is a balance between free speech and defamation of character. If you weren't allowed to speak out against a store, then there would be no incentive for the store to correct their actions short of being sued. Requiring people in an informal forum to use legally safe verbage is beyond the intent of the law. Trying to destroy a business by slandering their reputation is not cool either.

Basically:
mikejo - Loosen up. It was kind of rough to jump on him and imply he's trying to slander SuperGo. I believe the common analysis would be that SuperGo is capable of putting a bike together and tuning it (obviously they've made some money doing it), but that they didn't do a good job in nbgrom's case.
nbgrom - Protect yourself by limiting the context and letting other people determine whether SuperGo sucks. Less offensive and a more intelligent thread title would be: "SuperGo didn't tune my bike properly" or "New bike from SuperGo not tuned properly"
TheFixer - Why the implication that his bike sucks? A StumpJumper is hardly a crappy bike--shouldn't it be tuned properly when new?
FreeridinLoon - I don't understand your comment. In this case, is SuperGo not his LBS? They're not just mail-order. And what does supporting his LBS have to do with his bike sucking?
spleck - I spent too much time on this message and its now fairly off-topic.

I look at them just as I do REI. Yes they aren't only a mail-order company but they don't have the one on one type of service you get at a LBS. You have a LBS and majority of the time they put the bike together correctly. I don't know about SuperGo but my bike mech rides my bike after he does anything to it to make sure everything is in proper working order. Obviously, that didn't happen with SuperGo. I stand by my statement, you should have gone to our LBS and not a big "bikemart". You get what you pay for.

Sorry I am very new to bikes but I'm trying to understand all the terms used here. Does anyone know how I can identify a master link on my bike?
