well i got back from my ride today dissapointed in my brakes. on the trails i ride, there are alot of fallen trees, logs, little ditch like things for run-off. and they are a little nasty to hit going fast. i like to just bomb down the descents, but then i need to quick stop to traverse a log, or something. also if i loose control for some reason going down, my brakes are not stopping me in the time i would like them to. i dont think these are really quality brakes since my last post was about the rotors warping.

so once i gather some money i am going the most likely replace my front, and then wait for the holidays to take care of the rear.


i have looked at the hope mono-mini, hey come with the hope 2-pc rotors, they get rave reveiws. but they are hydros, and i dont have a clue how to tune/repair/set them up.


then, there are the avid bb7s, they also get rave reviews and i know how to do everything with them.

I would look at avid juicy 5's. They are stronger than most, reasonable price, use mineral oil and offer lots of modulation.

There isn't much to them beyond a bleed kit. And bleeding is pretty easy. How did the rotor warp, in a crash?

is there any advantage to using mineral oil over that other fluid?

i am not sure how it got warped, i came back from a pretty regular ride and decided not to clean my bike becasue it wasnt hat dirty. then i brought it out and started messing the the levers becasue they had alot of play, then they started to really rub and it looked like they were warped.

well, i checked mtbr and they got real good reviews so i am going to look further into them.

is something wrong with hope, i thought they were like a benchmark in discs?

Not in my world. They are the high mark for price and the low mark for value. I don't like them simply because of their cost and rarety. If something breaks, I need easy access to parts to fix them. I don't get that with Hope.

that said my hope brake is the best one ive ever felt,and i have rode bikes with avid juicy 7s and hayes el caminos, ya they may be rare, but it works amazingly and worth evey penny i paid for it.

oh by the way i run a hope mono6ti
and tell me it isnt sexy

I have ridden them as well and didn't notice any big improvement. Especially one that costs a couple of hundred per brake.

well the avids are some $50.00 cheaper, is it worth another 50 for hopes?

i know avid makes a great product, and i thought hope did. but if hope makes an expencive product, and a good one. i think i am going with avid which makes a good one for a good price. i have talked to the lbs guy and he said they are both really good brakes, but the mono mini is alittle better then the juicy 5.

???any comments???

why spend more and get the same or less quality than Avid. if you go Avid you WILL be happy. with Hope maybe, maybe not. Mtbike quarterly did a review on a bunch of brakes last spring and the Hope gave them trouble to the point of losing the front brake fluid(ergo,no brake) on a steep descent and giving them to say "they almost lost Hope" in them. their favorite was the Avids Juicy, followed by Hayes HFX9, then Shimano XT. nothing against anyone who likes Hope, but I wouldnt take the chance, but to each their own

Hopefully my new wheelset and the 6" rotor with adapter that I ordered from Germany arrive by the weekend. Then, I'll review the Juicy 5s.
