Looks like a Kona Blast - either 2004 or 2005.

It has been claimed as another, more expensive model, and this is exactly why I am asking all of you. I'm planning on buying this frame on Ebay and I want to make sure that it is what they say. Santiago, thanks for your input, I hope you are wrong. Anyone else? Please help!

Which model are they claiming it to be....whatever it is, it has to have a short name. Ask for a picture of the top tube with the name on it.

The Kona XC hardtail line is actually just a few frames as far as I know:
- cromoly e.g. Explosif. The picture does not look like a cromoly frame.
- 7005 aluminum. Found on every hard tail starting at the Lana'i all the way up to the Caldera.
- Easton ultralite race frame (aluminum). Found on the higher end hard tails like the Kula and Kula deluxe. The Kula and Kula Deluxe are not black.
- Scandium race frame on the 2006 Kula Supreme. The picture is NOT a Kula Supreme.

The frame in the picture is most likely a 7005 aluminum frame. I believe every single hard tail from Kona starting from the low end Lana'i to the Caldera have the same frame only painted differently. The 2005 Kona Blast looks exactly like the picture you have.

Even if you were to get a "Caldera" frame, I really don't think it is anything different than any other 7005 frame in their lineup.

Its actually an 03 Kula, the paint threw me off as well, I originally thought it was a Blast also. I did ask for another picture of the top tube but haven't heard back yet.

You'll have to find out if in 2003 the Kula came in the Easton race aluminum or in Scandium to be sure it is higher end. On the flip side, my understanding is that the race frames are more brittle and a frame that is pushing 3-4 years old may not be in tip-top shape.

It would have to be a hell of a deal for me to buy a 3-4 year old lightweight aluminum frame. Actually, on second thought, no deal would be good enough.

I agree. Here's a brand new Kona Caldera frame for $220 over at Speedgoat.
