Hey guys,

I'm trying to buy a bass worm. This is proving to be much more difficult than I thought as nowhere I know sells them. I've searched BF, the web at large and all the LBSs but nothing. Anyone know how to get hold of them?

Just in case you know them by a different name, they are a little rubbery tension adjuster used on the rear mech cable on the chainstay.

Any thoughts, tips or alternatives would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not totally sure what your talking about but it sounds like something that I think sram makes. Though, I can't remember the name of it either.

I'd never heard of the things either until my friend at the LBS told me about them. He used to have one on his Yeti but a customer needed it so he sold it. He can't seem to get hold of them any more but he says the difference it makes is amazing, especially with SRAM stuff. We both have XT with Attack shifters so I'll get 2 if I find any.

Ever try building one of those wheels? I've built one and it's a royal pain in the rear.

Back in the old days, SRAM was only used with Shimano rear derailleurs. The return springs in the Shimano derailleurs were not very strong and twist shifters did not do well because of it. This condition became worse when dirt and mud got into the cables or RD. There were lots of aftermarket items to help assist the anemic return spring such as Avid's Rollamajig.

The Bass worm was installed inline on the cable stop just ahead of the rear derailleur. It supplemented the rear derailleur return spring. It also served to seal the rear cable from mud and muck and became a necessity during that time on Mountain bikes with twist shifters.

Rear derailleurs are much better designed today so there is no longer a need for bass worms and other similar items.

By the way, if you still have your old Bass worm, they can easily be repaired using surgical tubing. Its the same stuff used for wristrockets available at your local sporting goods store. Just reuse the old cable stop and the cable clamp at the other end.
