Ok, this guy has this 2002 RockHopper:

Except he put a white RockShox psylo adjustable shock on it, and a front disc brake. He says the new wheelset saved 3 pounds over stock. He also took his big ring gear off, but still has it, and put one of those guards on, and put those chain guide thingy's back behind the crankset. It looks brand new, probably because he's only done this one particular 12 mile trail twice.
Anyway, he said he'd take $450 for it. Seems like a killer deal, but I'm leery of it since it's almost new. Also, I test drove another RockHopper that had stock disc brakes last night, and I thought they'd have more power than that. I was squeezing alot harder to stop the same as with my V-brakes. I squeezed as hard as I could and couldn't make it lock up. I thought one of the biggest advantages of disc brakes was less effort while braking so your fingers don't hurt at the end of the day. I was actually squeezing harder.

You must be leary of cheap disc brakes. If not set-up correctly, you won't get diddly squat for braking. Some cheap discs won't ever stop well. I couldn't pull up the spec from the link, but I'm assuming the stock brakes weren't set-up well.
I'd be curious of why the guy upgraded the wheels and the fork, rode the bike twice (allegedly) and wants to sell it for $450.

Supposedly he couldn't stand not having a single speed, and decided he wouldn't be happy unless he switched, but now it's in and he needs to pay it off. I saw it last night. I guess it's cool, if you're in to that sort of thing. I'm definitely not. It was very light, but rigid front and rear, with only one speed, and with skinny tires. It looked like a road bike with knobbies and a riser bar. I can't imagine giving up a brand new $650 RockHopper with a $350 shock, $100 worth of accessories like computer and guard, and $300 disk brake setup just to pay for half of this thing. Hell, he's probably a member of this board reading this right now and laughing. He also works at a bike shop though, and I'm sure he gets a huge discount.

I would be leary of the price. But then again I will usually buy something and sometimes sell low. Depends on the use I got.
Mechanical disk breaks are almost always garbage. Avids are good from what I hear and hayes are so so.
