I've have Mallets for about 3 weeks now and I didn't get into clipping accidents yet. My only experiences with clipless is when commute to school and to the tennis courts; I don't ride the trails yet with clipless. I don't really know if I got used to clipless yets, because I never had the need to clip out to save myself from injury, and I wonder if I would be able to if I did encounter such a problem, such as while riding certain parts of the trail near my house. Did anyone here switch to clipless pedals and haven't gotten into a clipping related injury and sucessfully got used to them?

It took a while getting used to them but no injuries because I couldn't unclip. Of all of the times I have bailed, being clipped in/unclipping has never been an issue.

My one clipless injury was my own stupid fault. Try not to laugh too hard at me. I've haven't had problems on the trail, but I was out screwing around after a ride, trying to work on my wheelies on a new bike, and I went over backward onto the pavement. I've done it plenty of times on platforms and with clips, and you only need to step back to save your ass. Being relatively new to clipless, I just watched my feet shoot up in the air as my back nailed the earth. My neck's still stiff.

The only time I get in accidents with my clipless is when i eat it hard, going downhill fast and would crash even if I had clip ins. And when I stop and forget I am clipped in, just fall over.

I just recently started riding with them and it did not take long at all to get used to them. I loosened them up so my foot will come right out. The only time I fall now is when I stop and forget I'm clipped in. I really thaught they would be much more difficult but they aren't.

only the day I got them and after clipping in and out a bazzillion times I thought Id show my wife how easy it was. needless to say I fell over in the grass and hurt the SNOT out of my ego and pride, other than that with only 1 exception, when I crash somewhere between "oh" and "$#!+" i unclip on my own, and that was more ego than elbow scrape because there were people behind me and I was trying to get off the trail while still clipped in

It is more than likely that you will have a problem clipping out on the trail at some time. And, you will fall over. If you've falling into weeds, you're a wuss. If you're falling into cactus or off a cliff, I can understand your concern.

To reduce the risk of not clipping out, you can adjust the Egg-Beater clip out angle by pointing the cleat at your big toe. This is a good way to cheat 5 degrees. That is, if you can get the brass screws out of without stripping them ;-)

The trails I ride has scattered pieces of rocks here and there. I don't ride near edges or any catuses(sp?). If I were to get into an accident, it would hurt bad. I don't ride with anything but clothes and maybe a backpack. No helmet or armor.

Q: So why don't you wear a helmet or body armor?

I'm 16 and I barely had enough money to buy my bike. I don't have the money to get protective gear yet.

Buy a helmet ASAP! You should have gotten that before you got clipless pedals.

Yeah, there's no excuse not to have a helmet, pretty bad idea in general, but unacceptable on the trails. You can get a helmet at Walmart for less than $20 that will do the job. BTW, the plural of "cactus" can be "cacti," or "cactuses." I've always said cacti and I live in the desert so I must be right.
