Cantilever breaks
Ok, so I have this really old Diamond Back mountain bike. I use it for some light mountain biking and commuting to work. It has, what I am told are cantilever breaks. The pads are really warn and I am having a hard time adjusting them so they don't squeeeeel like a pig. I know I am suppose to toe in the pads, but they are so warn. So, I went to buy new ones. My LBS laughed. They said they had not see breaks like that for 5 years. So I am asking for advise. What would you do if you were me? By the way I am broke so an all new bike is out of the question.

Well, go to another bike shop and ask for the pads. Somebody in the OC must sell olde-skool pads. Koolstop still makes them - should be around $8/wheel...

Do I understand you correctly? Did the shop not even stock cantilever brake pads? Laughing about that and not stocking things still common on many bikes is reason enough to find another shop and not go back there again.

I just bought cantilever pads for my 1988 Peugeot a month or two ago, they weren't hard to find and they were cheap ($2CDN/pair). Go to a different shop.

Cantelever brakes are not to be sniffed at and your LBS were a bit rude to laugh at them. Almost every decent cyclo-cross and touring bike still uses cantelevers.
Take care selecting the pad. Some pads have the metal mounting "rod" in the middle and other have it towards one end to allow for frame clearance. Make sure you get the same as your current style.

You should have laughed at him for laughing at you. While laughing you should have slowly shook your head and mumbled "Your such a tool", just loud enough for him to hear you.
