What Handle Bars......?

I am pretty new to MTBing, but ready to get a bit more serious with it. My interest is in mainly doing XC long distance routes - not racing as yet.

My current bike came with a Bontrager riser bar.

I wud appreciate it if someone can advise if they feel for what I intend to use my bike for I shud go for :
1. straight bars instead of a riser ?
2. Shud I am to buy a carbon bar ?
3. Use XC bar ends ?
4. If I use Bar ends, do I cut the end of the grip off to be able to slide the grip far enough long to then attach the bar ends ?

This may be pretty basic stuff but when yr new, yr new....

Thanks.

It all depends on what you like. On one of my bike I have a 3/4" riser, on my other bike I have a flat bar with bar ends.

i hear that you shouldnt put bar ends on risers. the rise is not ment to take the pressure you put on the end of the bars.

if you are looking for a different feel you are going to go with a different bar. would you like to be flat out in that typical xc fashion? or kind of upright? a stem will also help you out a lot with this.

i read reveiws on carbon bars and they said they flex, i didnt really want that so i went with a good ole' aluminum bar.

and welcome!

zx108 - I believe it is safe to put bar ends on most aluminum risers. Some carbon riser bars are approved for bar ends now as well.

Just checked. Here is one of the Easton carbon bars approved for bar ends. I believe the only easton riser bar not compatible with bar ends is the 135 gram Monkey Lite SL.

Not ALL bar ends are compatible. They must have the mounting bolt in the center of the hole. If it is offset, it will create a "hot spot" and will form an oval shape rather than a circle when the bolt is tightened. This will severely compromise the bar's integrity.

Didn't say all bar ends were compatible. I just assumed (I know, bad idea) that if someone was interested they would do a little research and check the pdf on easton's site.

No problem. I have bar ends on my Alpha Q Xroc flat carbon bar. I used Single Track solutions ST-lite bar ends because I read somewhere that they were aproved for carbon bars. I also chose them because the set was only 62 grams.
