Shimano MTB shoes
 

I've been thinking about getting some MTB shoes for a while now. Looking at the shoes on Shimano's site the ones I've liked the best where the SH-M058's. Now Nashbar has them on sale for $50 US so i'm thinking of getting a pair.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any experiance with this shoes and how they liked them. Did they hold up to MTBing, did they seem like a large make or small make (did you have to go up or down on your regular shoe size or where they fine).

Also how accurate is it to go by shimano's size chart i've never had bike shoes before so i'm a little worried about the size. I'm usually between a 11 and 12 depeneding on the shoe so according to the chart i'm like a 46 or 47.

And what pedals for cheap would you guys recomend for these shoes?

I have not used that particular model but of the Shimanos I have used I found the mtb shoes to run a bit large but their road shoe is dead on in size.
It is hard to order shoes on-line especialy if you have never even had cycling shoes before. I will pay extra and buy them at my LBS that way I can try them on first plus, my LBS give me comparable prices to what I may find on the net. If you have a great relationship with your LBS such as I do with mine and the deal on the shoes is incredable, then they may let you try some on with out you having to feel bad for not buying the shoes from them. Definitly find a way to try them on first. If you don't you may be in for some serious foot pain.

the pairs with the laces and one velcro strap are shimano's entry level shoes.

they are a good shoe to start with - they have become my spinning shoe though - I replaced them rather quickly with all velcroe.

there's just something about having to make sure the laces are tucked in so you don't KILL yourself :)

I had some lower end shimano shoes that didnt hold up very well. The cleats would no longer tighten down enough, causing them to rotate when I tried to clip out. Could just be a problem with the lower end shoes though. I now have a pair of specialized mountain sports and I love them.

Why would you have to worry about the laces? Sorry to ask a question that probably is common knowedge to most but i've been cycling since i was 7 and i've never had a problem with laces and I ride in just a pair of old addias tennis shoes.

Like DBD mentioned, you must try them on before buying. Would you trust buying any shoe without trying it?

Some mtb shoes have stiffer soles than others and that can make it a little awkward as the shoe might not bend too easily under the ball of the foot. Effect is that you might slap around as you walk as if you're flat-footed. Shoes are a personal thing anyway. I like Shimano shoes that have the velcro tape which is handy for keeping the lace ends out of the way. You don't want them getting caught on your chainring, eh?

I had a pair of very thin road shoes but I did not feel happy with them off-road as I felt a bit safer having something sturdier around my foot that gave better protection. A pair of trainers will do nicely as well.

Well I don't belive i've ever had my laces get caught in a chain ring. Guess I never really thought of that (have had my pants get a tear in them becaue of a chainring though). Part of the reason I liked these shoes is because of the single velcro strip. I perfer the look of laces. Also I don't belive my LBS carries Shimano shoes so I wouldn't be able to try them on anyway. Even if they did have them it would probably cost my 150+ Canadian to get these same shoes.

My husband wears an 11.5 in dress shoes and 12 in sneakers - his Euro size is a 45 - if that helps

actually that helps alot. I'm 11.5 in dress shoes as well and my sneakers all almost always 12.
