Many of you from the Charlotte/Lake Norman area are familiar with the Itusi Trail, the 6.7 mile MTB trail at Lake Norman State Park.
If not, you should become familiar with it, because it's a great ride. Trail design is outstanding, and the flow has been called "unbelievable." It's easy enough for a beginner, and still a lot of fun for experienced riders.
If you are familiar with the Itusi Trail, you may not realize that, while it's inside a NC State Park, it's entirely built and maintained by volunteers.
Currently, we are working on Phase III, a new 6.25 mile section which will nearly double the existing trail length. The corridor has been cleared and now it needs to be groomed to ride. It's physical work, but very pleasant on a beautiful fall day like the ones we've been having lately. Also, it's seriously rewarding.
We need volunteers. If you live in this area and like to ride, we need YOU. We have a contract with the state of NC stipulating that we complete 10 miles of trail (total) by the end of this year. If we don't complete those miles in time, the park staff may close the existing trail. That's why it's so important for you to pitch in. Besides, it's a lot of fun. Of course, bring your bike!
Every Saturday and Sunday, from 8:30 AM until about 1:00 PM, we are working on the new section, which is located here: https://maps.google.com/maps?q=clark+...troutman%2C+nc
Directly across from Clark Cove Road is a numbered park gate (I think this one is number 9), which the park staff will open while we're working. Follow the unpaved park road about a tenth of a mile to the small parking area on the right.
Tools are provided. Bring your own drinking water, snacks and work gloves. Safety glasses and boots recommended.
For more information, PM me, call the Lake Norman State Park office at 704.528.6350 or email Jeff Archer (jeff@firstflightbikes.com). Or just reply to this thread.
I'll look forward to seeing you there.
