Good deal?

Visited my LBS today and test rode two bikes, both of which I liked and thought they felt very similar to one another. The first was a Giant Iguana '06 (i believe), they're asking $599.99.

The second was a '05 Closeout bike. A Specialized Rockhopper Comp in black. It's a 19" with V-brakes, shimano deore xt (rear)(i believe) and a Manitou comp splice fork. Not sure what the travel on this fork would be, called back later and dude wasn't sure atm. They're asking $635+tax first come first serve.

I've been seduced by how good bikes with disc brakes look and would love to maybe upgrade later, as some of you have stated in the past, a cheap bike with disc is probably being used as a sales gimmick and is better to by a good bike with V's and upgrade later.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post and for any thoughts and/or suggestions.

I bought an end of year, 05 Rockhopper and I really like it. But my advice to you is, now that you've narrowed down your search, demo both bikes and buy the one that feels the best to you. I tried Trek and Gary Fisher, then tried the Rockhopper and found, for me, it handled better and was more suited to my needs. This is the same advice I received on this forum and from a freind who has been a MTB'er for over six years. By the way, I don't think you can go wrong with either bike you've selected. Regarding your other comment about upgrading, right or wrong I'm doing the same as you, buy the best bike I can afford now, and upgrade later if I want to and I don't regret it. Now that I own the Rockhopper, I'm thinking maybe I want to upgrade the fork, not the brakes since I'm real happy with the stock V's.
