To all those who've dissed me for buying a Schwinn S-40 @ Target, here's what you should know...
I was beginning to get overweight. 6'0" & 230lbs. I had quit lifting weights years ago. I used to look like Goldberg (professional wrestler) back then. I had began to be a couch potato. I was a smoker. I'm 35 years old now. I had smoked a pack a day since 17 years old. I dipped snuff from 13 to 17 years. I was heavily hooked on nicotene. Also a month prior I had found out I had hypertension & high blood pressure.
I quit smoking on September 9th @ 9p.m. I bought my Schwinn 2 weeks later. I ride at least a mile per day. I do up to 25 miles per day on weekends. I've lost 30 lbs. since starting riding my bike. I also exercise 30 minutes x3 days per week indoors.
I used to be heavily into freestyling, jumping & racing in my teen years. Once I got my drivers license, I gave that all up. I bought my Target Schwinn to recover from my downward spiraling health. It has worked. I am making a turn around in my life. This is the reason I get soooooo offended at the bike snobs here giving me such a hard time over a Schwinn. It has saved me.
Please save yourselves by being a little more understanding towards a cheap bike rider. You might not know the whole story. You might be dissing a product that has saved their life.

Congratulations on your achievements - keep it up.
And may I suggest you try dropping that same melodrama on your "wifey," maybe she'll let you get a more expensive bike some day.

Saving your life or whoevers has nothing to do with the quality of a bike. So I don't see how this is relevant to the fact that you think your bike is great.

I'm just getting into MTBing and I bought a Schwinn Aluminum Comp. Which I love. $125. Sure, the wheels that came with it were cheap (I replaced 'em with some better used ones, adding $25) and the shift technology is several years old -- but everything works fine and it makes MTBing possible for me right now. If I'd had to wait until I could afford an LBS bike, I'd still be dreaming, not riding.
I've read elsewhere that this kind of bike can be a good way to start and that when I've destroyed it, I'll know I'm ready for the next level. Besides, maybe MTBing's not for me? If that turns out to be true, what have I "lost"? $150 for a couple dozen great rides. And some weight.
So rock on, Prozakk -- you're not the only one. I my X-Mart Schwinn.

A lot of us started on X-mart bikes. I know i did. That is even where my username came from. I started with a "Schwinn Ranger" from Target. However, I only owned it for a couple weeks. I had to contend with the snobbery as well. Everyone told me to get a better bike.
Guess what? They were right. I took my bike back to Target after 2 weeks and got a refund. I then went to LBS and got a nice entry level Trek. Since then (2 years ago) I have ridden it over 7000 miles. I also got another used Trek 4300 just like it off Ebay. I have ridden it 5000 miles.
On top of that, I got a Trek 1000 road bike this summer that i have ridden nearly 3000 miles. My point? Snobbery is not always bad. The Trek 4300's that i own are WAY better bikes than the Schwinn Ranger. The $200 in price difference makes tons of difference in the quality. If you are going to spend thousands of hours on a bike, you be much better off spending a couple hundred extra dollars.
I primarily ride for fitness as well. Just about any entry level LBS bike is suitable for fitness riding. In fact if you are really trying to get fit, the heavier the better! You don't have to have a top of the line ride to get a work out. However, any xmart bike is so inferior to an LBS bike that it is senseless to do any serious riding on one.

Thanks for the kind words.
The LBS is a 1.5 hour drive (1 direction) from here. And I don't own a truck to carry it in.

Family joins
suit over bicycles
Thursday November 03, 2005
A local family is part of a class-action suit claiming Wal-Mart sold defective bicycles that led to potentially serious accidents.
Roxanne Berry, who lives just across the road from Southridge Centre and the Wal-Mart there, is suing the retail giant along with parents from Louisiana, Georgia, Illinois and California. Also being sued are Dynacraft Industries, the bicycle manufacturer, and Carl Warren & Co., which handles the bicycle accident claims for Dynacraft.
The families allege that Wal-Mart sold and continues to sell NEXT brand bicycles, even though it knows they have a "dangerous and defective" front wheel quick release mechanism, according to the lawsuit filed in California Superior Court.
Some of the plaintiffs, including Berry, allege they were forced to sign settlement agreements after the defendants led them to believe that the accidents were isolated incidents.
Wal-Mart representatives could not be reached to comment for this story.
Roxanne Berry claims her 10-year-old son, Freddy, had a potentially serious accident on a bicycle purchased from Wal-Mart.
On Oct. 13, 2000, Freddy, then 10 years old, was headed to a friend's house on his week-old bike, a NEXT Ultra Shock bought at the Southridge Wal-Mart. The front wheel came off, sending Freddy over the handlebars and into the pavement, Berry said.
The mother of Freddy's friend brought Berry her son within five minutes of the accident, she said. Berry took her son to Thomas Memorial Hospital in South Charleston, where he was treated for severe cuts, a broken nose and bruises to his face and shoulder, she said.
"He was just out of it," she said. "It kinda knocked him silly."
Freddy, now a 15-year-old sophomore at George Washington High School, has a small scar under his nose, she said.
Because of Freddy's medical bills, Berry settled with Dynacraft for medical bills only. But, she was misled, she said.
"I asked if there were problems with these bikes," she said. "They told me no ... I could take the settlement or nothing. I didn't want to have to pay all these medical bills."
If she would have known about the bicycles, she wouldn't have settled, she said, adding that she joined the class-action suit with the other families after hearing about the possibility from a San Francisco lawyer.
The parents are suing for civil conspiracy, fraud, product liability, negligent infliction of emotional distress, negligence and conscious disregard to safety and breach of warranty. The suit is seeking general, special and punitive damages and is scheduled to go before a California jury in late December.

there is a BIG difference between Schwinn and Magna/Next. that part of the story about you kicking the smoking habit has inspired me. Ive been smoking since I was 13 and am 41 now. its been a tough thing to try to break. I have been riding for over 10 years now off road. my 1st off road bike was a Pacific from Toys r us and I rode that thing until i sold it to get a Ross from target. by the time I was done farting with that bike the only thing stock was the frame but it had exactly the stuff I wanted . I sold it to get another Pacific bike that had SRAM and DEORE(STX at the time) stuff on it. I rode that bike until i got a big tax refund and got a Diamondback Vlink. I rode that until I broke the frame. they gave me a Diamondback XTS3 frame and components. I broke the frame at the pivot point and welded it back together and rode that until I got the Devinci Guzzler Im riding now. each bike Ive had has been a step up from the last and I have built the component package from the stock as things wear out to what I want exactly instead of what came on the bike
just be careful doing drops and stunts on an Xmart bike. the stuff is not as good as upper/middle of the road end components.
I learned how to work on bikes because of cheap bikes
congratulations on the accomplishments and 2 thumbs up for your spirit and courage to keep going when it seemed impossible

BTW I plan on replacing everything except the frame/swingarm/cranks.
If I break the frame, I'll transfer all the components I chose.
Next round of upgrades are grips, rear shock, fork, headset, brakes, stem, bars, & possibly wheels.
So far I've gotten new pedals, ballfrog, bar ends, rear brake pad.

My huffy saved me, so I'm with you. I bought a Huffy Memorial day weekend in 1994. By Labor day I'd lost 30 pounds and gained the love of cycling that has remained to this day. I'm no longer the 155 lb guy riding and training every day, but I still know how good it made me feel to be a different person, so to speak.
It was also a big boost to my self-esteem when I overheard some female coworkers talking about how they liked my butt in my cycling shorts.
Keep riding

for those who do not know, the biggest side effect of Wellbutrine if the loss of urge to overeat as well as not wanting to smoke ciggarettes so they market it as a diet aid under a different name and a stop smoking aid under a still different name and most health insurances will NOT pay for the drug to be used in those capacities, even though it makes a person healthier so they make MORE $$$

OK. Now that i have seen your home theater gear, i have a different opinion. You have a bunch of high end HT stuff and are riding a Schwinn from Target? C'mon! Seriously I had the HT bug for awhile too and have a basement full of stuff that i honestly hardly ever use any more.
Maybe it is because i spend waaay too much time on this forum and reading cycling stuff but I have just about zero interest in HT anymore. Yeah, it is nice for the occasional movie with the family, but as hobbies go....cycling blows HT away.
I know that some people honestly can't afford a $350 bike so I am careful not to criticize. However, when i see a room full of pricey HT equimpment, I then know that you need a better bike. You will enjoy your ride so much more on a LBS bike. You will not progress very far into cycling with the Target bike.

I still got my x-mart mongoose mgx. I've had it for 3 years and it's pretty tough. I am only 13 so I can't afford a good bike lol. But it's helped me lose alot of weight because I hate running but I love cycling. So I guess it's helped me from having a heart attack etc

My 2¢ Worth:
I didn't bash you about your cheap bike.
I'm smart enough to understand that it's NOT the
bike, but the Rider who makes the biggest difference.
I'm not the least bit afraid to bet that I can, quite easily,
win a race against 90% of the people who read this forum
while riding my daughter's Next 21-speed I bought her from
Wal-Mart for less than $100.
I wonder how many other's on here would be willing to bet say, $1000?
Have a nice time riding whatever bike you choose to own & F### ALL those
who make fun of you or your bike.... Their bubble will quickly pop when they
meet my type of rider on the mountain, trust me....

Those articles are rediculous. I'm all for not buying bikes at those stores but the quick releases probably fell off because the kids didnt tighten them. Also the one with the crank and pedal falling off causing someone to go over the handlebars? doesn't make sense to me. If the Screw was loose the girl should have recognized it before it fell all the way off. Yes Wal-Mart may not properly assemble the bikes but if anyone is at fault for these it is the parents of these children for their ignorance to bicycles.

You will enjoy your ride so much more on a LBS bike. You will not progress very far into cycling with the Target bike.

I still get lots of use from the HT...for music & comedy sitcoms. But my PS 2 only has 1 hour of use in the last 3 months. That's way down!
My Wifey appologized to me today for limiting the funds such for the bike. She now understands how much a bike means to me, and how serious I am.
I am the limiting factor on the bike funds now...I wanna finish the HT 1st. Then it's time to go nuts on a bike.
I had a long talk w/ Wifey. I am not putting more $ into the Schwinn, except for bars & brakes. Once I finish the HT, I'm buying a used Ultra $$$ DH bike. The Schwinn will be a back-up bike then.
