I got a hanger OTW. Should be here mid-week.

First visit to Bootleg Canyon. Not many miles, but some of the hardest single track I've seen in a while. It was a blast.

Got two really great rides in on Friday and Saturday. The ground is really mushy after all the freezing and thawing but it gives a good workout. Mostly gravel roads right now.......... I'm in need of some dry hardpack fast single track..........bummer.

First time riding for real out on the trail in almost a year since a dislocated shoulder & surgery ordeal.
Really happy, and not even really sore! It's been a VERY LONG TIME!! AHHHH!!!
Also, me looking like the hunchback after surgery, about to explode with IV and joint fluids.

More of a track person than roadie these days, but once in awhile I do get out on the mtb.

From today:

Something I've been eyeing.

Sscyco, his son and I hit up Beacon again Sunday - - along with just about every other downhiller in the area. After the morning fog lifted, the day opened up to sunshine and the dirt conditions were nearly perfect. Spent a while up near the top of the 'new' course trying to get one particular double dialed - - just sessioned that section until we all got it down cold. Good feeling - - I'd only cleared it once before, so was able to tick another nemesis off my list.

Big crowd had assembled at Girthmore - - a huge drop - - some of the regulars have an eye to incorporating it as a Pro-only line in the first race this season. I'll spare the details but suffice to say sscyco has more balls than I do. He went off it and lived to tell. I better leave it to him to fill in the details. His boy launched it too. Dunno if I'll do that one this season or not; it's one of those ones where logic tells you it's perfectly do-able and seeing a dozen guys do it confirms it. But looking down from the top is just kinda a gut-check.

Skye sending it last winter:

Skye sending it last winter:

Lived - but barely. That pic does not do it justice. It is said to be a 16" vert drop with the same distance out from the ledge to the landing.

Anyway - my boy has wanted to do it for a while - he's 15. I actually think he is a better rider than myself - just needs to smooth out the rough spots. So after watching a bunch of guys do it, Bob (my boy) says "do you think I can do it" - I reply "I wouldn't let you if I thought you'd crash". He follows out one of the fast locals down it and lands it perfectly. I got so excited and asked who was going next - a young guy that I don't know says follow me - I think OK I've seen him hit it a bunch of times today. I find out much later that this kid hits it quite a bit slower than most the other guys. I knew it was bad as soon as I cleared the ledge, I nosed into the landing about a foot short - sent me over the bars and I came to a stop about 50' from the landing. Probably something I learned in my previous military life - I kept a good tuck and rolled it out. Every thing on me took a hit, and I am incredibly sore - but that's it - no breaks, sprains, hematomas, etc. I have had much lighter hits with way worse injuries. And my bike seems to be fine - a close inspection will be performed tonight.

When I got home and told my wife - she called me an idiot - and said I have to try it again next weekend. She will have the camera ready......

Made it. Skye always busts something off it - - that's just the way he is (read that: young and fearless).

I honestly think it's a good 18-20' down into the transition, with at least a 12' projection out to catch it. If it was just a cliff jump into the water it would still give me the willies (but I am old and over-cautious). But to give you an idea why sscyco did it, it was just kinda that 'right' environment that day: a lot of people doing it to study, experienced guys to follow off to guage speed . . . and plenty of cell phone support if you piled it . Unfortunately, as ss said, he picked the wrong kid to drop in behind. It's one of those places where you really have to have your flow on and you can't afford an interruption - - especially since there's no pull-out once you might discover things are off.

He's also right that the photo does not do it justice; but that was the best perspective I can find of it on short notice. It was surreal watching - - it was like he nosed straight down nto the top of the landing, and then it was almost slow-motion watching him loosely tumble to a stop. I was bracing for a big crunch and clatter that thankfully did not come.

Whoa, you told her after all, eh? I come clean in small bits of digestible information over the course of a few days. Hey, if conditions are still good and you're going back I may have to do some Rushmore warmups and then finally give it a go . . . .

Yea - I will hit the Kokanee drop a few times and purposely flat land it - make sure I keep that front wheel where it needs to be.
