best bike for me...

I am into road cycling, but would like to have something as a change of pace. I am looking at buying an entry level MTB but need some advice on what to look for and furthermore, how much I should look at spending and what models/makes would be best. If anyone could help me, that would be great. I have searched and found some useful info but nothing that leads me to any conclusions. Other than the bike willl I need anything else specifically for MTB that I wouldnt already have for my road bike?
