EDIT: Video has been uploaded here

Well what a day it was today! Sun was out, hovering around 30C, clear blue skies, over 1000+ spectator turnout! We were back at Lysterfield a week later watching the Australian National XC Championships (MTBA) series :D.

This was the first race we (sS-bEn and I), had witnessed on the 6km compeition course and its amazing how far this course does extend!
We came during the womens race, here are some photo's from just one location on the trail: (all resized)

Between these races we clocked up some km's ourselves on the surrounding trails, also explored a lovely new one aswell that I will definatley ride again! :D

The Men's race, same course as the womens except 7 laps of the 6.2km (?) course began at 2pm. Apparently it was about 18min - 20min a lap and we ran out of time to see the finish but we took a lot of videos and a few pics! (the videos will be uploaded and posted here in a few days :))

We took most of the mens race shots from this one location...here they are!

Finally the winner and leader of most of the race!..

It was a really great day, we will definatley come back in a quite time and ride the extra section of the 'compeition course' shown above!

Some of the video's taken should be up here in a few days so stay tuned!

I say, 70% of the riders had Fox forks.

swifferman 12-11-05 06:10 PM

Woah first time I've ever seen a boardwalk like that! How wide is it? Picture makes it look less than a foot!

mtnbiker66 12-11-05 06:28 PM

Great pics, looks like you guys had a blast!

[bEn] 12-11-05 06:35 PM

Here are some more pics. We actually didn't take that many pictures, i guess we were too busy watching and riding. I'll never forget it though!

Yeh it does look pretty thin, probalby over a foot maybe 2 feet i'm not too sure, but the speed they were going around them they must have really good control!

blue_neon 12-11-05 11:19 PM

Here is the course map aswell:

!

Holy crap. That guy has some serious lean going in that corner. I recently put on a set of Maxxis wet screams and hope to be able to rip into a corner like that with no fear of the front end washing out.

C Law 12-12-05 08:12 AM

thanks for the pics blue neon

What do you think was the percentage of the riders there that had v brakes versus discs? Looks like a nice dry day, I bet there were quite a few running V's.

How about forks? Anyone running anything besides Fox , RS Sid, or Lefty's?

trekkie820 12-12-05 10:56 AM

I can see why that guy won. He is screaming into that turn. Any singlespeeders?

Very much were disk brakes, especially in the Mens. I was quite stunned with this because from the UCI world cups i've watched on TV, many had v-brakes and since this was the first race i've been to I was expecting a lot of them but infact not many if any had "v's" in the mens race. I did recall a few in the womens though but yeh that was a bit of a shock.

A lot of Fox, Sids, a few Lefty's. I didn't really notice any other ones, I'm sure they're might have been some others but I can't remember. Fox and Sid's were the most popular.

Not too sure on that one, maybe sS-bEn recalls?

[bEn] 12-12-05 06:21 PM

I doubt they would have been using a singlespeed bike in the race. Some of the hills are amazingly hard to get up and you would definatly need to be in a low gear to get up them. I only saw one singlespeed dude, he was riding a Surly, but he was spectating.

zx108 12-12-05 06:53 PM

no dual sus. then from those pics it looks like that trail is real smooth.

[bEn] 12-12-05 07:12 PM

Hardly any dual suspensions. I saw about 1 or 2 in the mens race, as well as the womens.

KrisA 12-13-05 07:55 AM

Wow, great pics! Looked like a great race course, though I would have been very cautious on that boardwalk! Going off course there would likely end your race in a hurry.

Crazy how my pulse excelerates just looking at race pics, racing is a total adrenaline rush. Those who haven't tried it, should.

So, the singlespeed thing hasn't caught on down under?

Haha. I wouldnt' be riding single speed in this course, thats for sure!

Hopper 12-13-05 07:43 PM

Singlespeeds are reasonably big down here. Lots of people trail ride with single speeds, but very few race them. The guy at my LBS has a really schmick rigid singlespeed with light components, this bike is lighter than his oldish kinda cheap road bike. Then there are a heap of singlespeed DJ and street bikes. I am assuming you aren;t including them in your caught on thing.

[bEn] 02-03-06 12:19 AM

Well Iíve done some editing today and made it into 1 big video. The quality of it isnít the best, but itís still good to watch. I had some videos of the womenís race, but didn't have time to edit them. We could have done more filming of some downhill stuff and more turns, but we didnít have enough time. Oh yeah first guy on the turns was the winner. (Green bike, red sort of gersey)

Size of video isn't that large. Around 9mb. PutFile is the only place I know of to upload movies... so yeah here it is...

Lysterfield Races

BCBike 02-03-06 12:23 AM

Man those people are in crazy good shape.

[bEn] 02-03-06 09:27 PM

Look at Post #21. Watch the video.

The Selector 02-10-06 07:26 PM

hey thanks for the video... how fast do you say they were going on the initial sprint?

badsac 02-12-06 09:20 PM

Does anyone race on rigids anymore? Looking at that track, suspension seems almost a waste. I only got off a rigid onto an 06 xtc2 recently, and be buggered if I can go as fast.
