Slicks On A MTB...Safe?
Hi There,
I have a Specialized Rockhopper Disk 2005 with a pair of Specialized Crossroads Armadillo 26 x 1.95, wire bead extremely heavy tire. I use my bike everyday for road commuting. Would I be able to get away with a pair of these Conti 1.0 Grand Prix folding tyres? Is it safe for a MTB to ride these?
Danny

... and you are riding on the road! I have Bontrager Select Invert 1.5 slicks on my NRS when I am in "street mode". Work great. Buying a Roadie at the start of the year so will not ride the NRS on the trail and road anymore, just the trail.

Make sure it fits the rim. 1.0" on a MTB rim seems a little too small, but what the hell do I know.

The rims are Mavic XM117 - they might be a bit too wide for the Continentals. If you've already purchased the tires, put 'em on and see if they'll fit. if not, you might want to try something a hair wider, like a 26 x 1.25.

Ive seen some pretty amazing 2.1 street tires. Almost slicks, but not quite.
How much more rolling resistance will a 2.1 or 1.95 have over a 1.25?

2.1 would have more, 1.95 not so much, 1.25 would have the least. Approximately .233456783322334454554444 more for every .1" larger tire.

I have a Kona that I commute on. In the back I run a Hemisphere Armadillo Tire (26x1.95), and up front, a Conti Town and Country (26X2.1). The tires are installed on some old Mavic 317's, and I'm also running tire liners. I run these at about 50-60 psi. Only issue I have is getting used to slicks.
Edit: hit the save changes too early. I have two issue with the smaller tires. 1. Don't float on the dirt too well (i.e. riding through a construction area), and 2. You really have to look out for the cracks in the road.

Have mavic 517 rims and use the Grand prix tyres.Ideal road tyre in my opinion. Only 1 problem- If your rims start to go Concave with the 100psi that the grand prixs use.( ie they are worn) Then don't run them.
Have used the Conti's for about 6 years and they are definitely the Go- faster tyre on tarmac. Track pump is required to get to 100psi, and no problems with grip- even on wet roads.
