When I was at Myrtle a few months ago I called around to a few bike shops to see if there were any group rides I could join. Most of them had no clue though since pretty much all they did was rent beach cruisers.

Just grab a phone book and call around, I'm sure you will find a bike shop to rent a bike from.

I didn't even catch the NC part. My sister lives in North Myrtle, I really need to get down there to see her more often. Would be a great time to go down and get some base miles in.

Yes, very cool place. Can't remember the name of the places but one place there makes some great mixed drinks. Another place is a very cool microbrewery.

One of my favorite things to do at the beach is to visit Ripley's Aquarium. That place is awesome!

When I was a kid we used to go for about a month every year, generally the month of August. We would stay at Pirate Land campground. When I was little (2 or 3) we started out just staying in a tent. As the years went on we had a small camper, then a little bigger and a little bigger. The last few years we were in a 28 foot fifth wheel. now that was my idea of roughing it. The family vacations pretty much ended in 1993 though. Once I graduated from high school my parent's decided that they could start enjoying their vacations without me. Now we (my wife and I) either get a hotel room or just stay with my sister a few days.

Myrtle Beach is only about 3 1/2 hours from Charlotte, not too bad of a drive. I drive to Myrtle Beach (about 6 1/2 - 7 hour drive) about once a year. I go to Charlotte to visit my brother about three times a year.

I thought I was reading my life story for a minute there LowCel. We used to go to Myrtle for about 2 weeks a year and also stayed at Pirate Land. My family's RVs grew with time as well eventually ending up in a 35ft Aljo Alliance 5th wheel. Our stories part at high school graduation (91 btw), I went to the Army and they began vacationing in Las Vegas.

Anyway, good story..

Just thought you people might like to know:

Worst Medium Cities for Crime (200,000-500,000 pop.)

Myrtle Beach, SC
Myrtle Beach has the highest total rate of crime in the nation, due to a high rate of violent crime and the nation's highest rate of property crime. In particular, the rates of assault, burglary, and larceny are particularly high.

Montgomery, AL
The murder rate is significantly high in Montgomery, as are the rates of robbery, burglary, and larceny.

Laredo, TX
While the larceny rate is high in Laredo, residents can take comfort in the relatively low rates of murder and forcible ****.

Waco, TX
Like Laredo, violent crime is less of a concern in Waco than property crime. In particular, burglary and larceny are a problem.

Wilmington, NC
Wilmington has the second-highest rate of burglary in the country. On the other hand, the rates of forcible **** and assault are low.

You RARELY hear anything bad on the news channels down there either. Funny trick they are playing on all the dumb tourist's, huh? (Myrtle Beach)

More here: 5 out of the top (worst) 15 cities in the entire USA are in or near Myrtle Beach too....

It's a little misleading with Myrtle Beach, or any tourist towns really. Myrtle Beach's population may be within that catagory but that number is probably easily double itself when you include tourists which occupy the town about 9 months a year. If you included the toursist in the head count and compared it with cities of similar sizes it would be on par. Larceny is always going to be high in tourist towns unfortunately. And voilent crimes are probably thru the roof when you consider spring break week, harley week, and black biker week.

Granted, numbers can be skewed to back up any claim, but just thought those tidbits were interesting.
