Well I finally finished converting the Peugeot to singlespeed as well as adding disc brakes up front last night. I rode the bike to and from work and it felt pretty good...though the 32x16 gearing was a little low for commuting.

Tonight, I took it out on some of the mild XC trails near my house just to get a feel for the bike...nothing too technical (I stayed off of the fun singletrack) but there were some steep hills for fun descents and climbs.

Just a quick summary of the build:
- Peugeot Fun Star steel frame, 54cm, from 1989
- Dimension disc specific fork (for CX), only 1" rigid fork I could find with disc brake mount
- Specialized bar and stem, Tange 1" headset, Profile Design grips
- Shimano levers, Hayes HMX-1 front disc, Avid SD SL rear V-brake
- Front wheel: Mavic X139 with Specialized stout hub
- Rear wheel: some cheap Norco steel wheel with a 16T freehub
- Specialized Roll-X tires 26x2.0
- Kona saddle, Peugeot post
- Original Peugeot chain
- Peugeot crankset/BB and 32T 74mm BCD ring....or at least that is what is used to have (see pics below)
- Shimano M505 pedals

I think that is it. Here's a couple of pics...





You may have noticed the chain in the pictures...well, right near the end of the ride, I had a pretty short and very steep climb, near the top I stood to pedal and crunch! I thought it was going to be an issue with the rear wheel (i.e., the axle) but I actually sheared the head off of one of the chainring bolts, tore a piece out of the chainring, and wrecked one of the spider arms on the crank (although it was kind of a hack job before to make it SS). Looks like I'll have to buy a proper crankset and chainring.





And now it sucks because I am out of trail bikes...I have to get parts to fix up the Peugeot before I can ride it, and I just put the Marta SL brakes on the Rockhopper (and used the levers and rear brake on the Peugeot) but I don't have a rear disc wheel so I can't ride that yet either (I was just planning on riding the Peugeot and then getting some American Classic disc wheels in a month or two). The Major Jake doesn't inspire any confidence on icy singletrack so it looks like I'll have to ride my wife's Kona this weekend!

For a 1" threadless steer tube it was the only one I could find. I wish the 1X1 was available with a 1" tube, then I'd have a lot more tire clearance.

The fork is actually designed for a 700c tire...I ordered it from the guys at Webcyclery and they checked how much clearance I would have with a 26" tire.
