hey forgive me for sounding dumb, but does anyone know why my front hayes disc brakes are making a scraping sound when pressed moderate to hard? I have just bought a new giant trance3 two days ago and the brakes sounded fine for the first day, then yesterday the front brakes started making this scraping sound. I took it in to the bike store today, the guy said that a part of the pads had gone hard and shiny so he sanded it down.... brakes were fine for a couple of laps around the block then when i get it home and go for a long ride the noise comes back. At first i thought it was normal, and i dont know maybe this is normal and i am being paranoid, but i'm not too happy because i spent a **** load on this bike (for my standards anyway). It may even still be breaking in, but the noise shows no sign of disappearing. I know nothing about bikes mechanically - all i know is that i've been riding bikes not long after learning to walk and i love mountain bikes and riding in general. Help me out, thanks!

I know its pretty normal for disk brakes to squeal. Mine made I guess what could be considered scraping sounds when they were brand new, but that was just the braking in, doesn't do that now. The noise wasn't loud at all, just something I noticed. Good luck,

My rotor is rubbing up agianst the brake pads. But you learn too tune it out lol.

Take it back to the LBS, have them scuff the pads, align the brakes, and then have them tell you how to bed the brake pads properly. Like car and motorcycle brakes, they need to be broken in properly. If you don't do it right, you'll keep glazing the pads.

I seasoned mine by getting a running start and then applying the brakes HARD and FAST on, off,on, off. they were seasoned in almost no time.. if your LBS wont adjust/align them for you (which they SHOULD) then check out the bicycle mechanics section of the forums by clicking on the forum jump at the bottom of the page and going there. I would think your shop would have checked that as well.
dont go there like a know it all but dont go in there like a know nothing either or they may BS you around. just tell them the problem and ask them to align your calipers to your rotors. and watch them if they will let you. that is another advantage to buying from a local. you can learn a lot from them from watching and asking questions

I had the same exact problem with my Hayes HFX-9 Carbons yesterday like crazy...I was damn annoyed also, having just bought the things. But I looked up the manual online and it advised that, if my pads were engaged on the rotor constantly, I take out the pads and push the pistons back with a box end wrench. I believe that this might be your problem but I'm not sure. If so, download the manual according to your model and just ask if you need more help!
