guess i need a new bike

heard some creaking while riding my gt zaskar the other day. upon inspection, the frame is cracked at seat tube/top tube junction. really liked this bike. anyway, i was wondering what to get to replace it. i was thinking about steel. any suggestions on a good frame. would like to keep it under 600.00 if possible. thanks in advance.

Are you sure your frame isn't under warranty?

it's a 1999 model, so i'm not sure if pacific warranty goes back that far.

Might be worth checking into.
In another thread, someone just bought a Giant Iguana. With disc brakes it's $600. Probably could be had for a bit less. Really nice bike for the price.

I assume you were talking $600 for the frame? If so you might consider the gunnar rockhound.Nice reynolds frame. And it's right in that price.

If you want another Zaskar my LBS has one with a judy race fork for 290USD. If you are interested I could speak with them. If you like the parts on your current bike just get a frame and swap the parts over.
For the most part all the major manufacturers make a decent frame.

redfox got it right, i was talking 600 for a frame. i did some checking around today. so far i've seen trek 8500 for 500, orbea team for 425, kona explosif (steel) 800, and salsa ala carte 800. harris cyclery has gunnar for 675. oh yeah, i also saw the giant xtc for 350. i stripped down the frame on my zaskar today.

thought i'd give an update. in further checking, it turned out lbs had given me the wrong price for the kona explosif steel frame. it was 425 not 800. i ordered one yesterday. it got great reviews on mtbreview. hope it is as good for me. thanks to all that replied.
