Shimano shfters

I have test rode two bikes with EF50 shifters and one bike with Alivio shifter. The travel to shift from the smallst chainring to the 2nd chainring seems excessive on one EF50 and the Alivio. On the Specialized bike with the EF50, the shifter moved its full travel and then had to move the shifter a 1/4 of the way again to get into the middle chainring.

A Trek I test rode with the Alivio shifter needed the thumb shifter moved far enough to be forward of the flat handle bar. I am assuming both of these bikes are way out of adjustment.

My question is how much travel should I expect to move the chainring?

Shifting the rear Derailleur was no problem and this shifter was indexed. I did not feel an index on the left hand shifter for the front Derailleur.

Maybe my question needs to be rephrased. How far do you need to move your thumb shifter to shift into the next highest chainring?

I rode Alivio triggers for a long time.

The long throw to pull cable (thumb) on the fd side is normal. They are like that. Acera triggers are similar in action.

Unlike Acera, however, the Alivio triggers are tough and reliable. I have a pair from 2000 that still work great.

Thank you TwinCam! That information will help me to decide which bike to buy.
