nothing really. nothing wrong with them either. how do you really define greatness in a cable actuated mechanical brake?

i guess their price. as far as ease of set-up...that is strictly opinion

They run on energy crystals.

Actually, they have great stopping power and are easily adjustable.

yeah, but this doesn't make them "so great". my hydros do the same thing. i guess if anything makes them "great", it would be the price : performance. this is certainly something

nice...i have been wanting an excuse to buy the Juicy 5's. please let us know what you think of the differences. i don't suspect there will be much assuming the rotor sizes are equal. but PM me or something and let me know.

They are exactly the same, except for the lack of a pad contact adjustment, and split perch clamp. Same pads, caliper.

that is why i want the 5's, for simplicity. i know the contact adjustment would be a feature i don't need. i think the new 7's and 5's are all split perches...no? this i do not like because i do not use lock on grips (was that a double negative? )

Id love to get a concensus on the bb5's. Alot of the bikes im looking at have bb5 brakes, but im not really keen on getting them unless they are as good as the bb7 in terms of stopping which i hear they are not because of different pads.

Im leaning to a non-disc bike for the moment and upgrading wheelset and brakes to a good set of hydros later. That said, it would be nice to have a disc ready bike from the get go.

something you might want to consider, if you do not have discs to begin with, then the forks/frame will have canti bosses obviously. if you get discs from the get go, some frames do not even have the canti's. minor detail, but it is something i would investigate if it were mine. although many frames have both so that makes it hard sometimes. i'll tell you, one attraction of my Reba fork was the simple fact of NO canti's.

i can't say for sure, but from what i read and probably what you have read, i don't think you should worry about the BB5s being worse than 7s. if it is just the pads...who cares! (although they can be kind of expensive)

The bb5's in my mind are just like the others by way of power. They will set up easier because they have the CPS(caliper positioning system) which is basically that they moved the mounts on the caliper a little bit so they can fit some V-brake pad washer in there.

The bb7's are so sweet mainly because they have an outboard pad adjust. There are a few other things like a spring tension adj, but I've never noticed that making much of a different. The pad adjustment is nice though because you can move the pads closer together and still keep the whole lever arm throw so your modulation is a lot better.

Compared to hydros I can't really say. I've had three sets of bb7's and never felt like it was necessary to move to hydros. The 7's have been adaquate and I feel like if I go to hydros I may not want to go back, and I also don't want to have to buy a bleed kit or mess with that stuff, like EVER. So whatever.

I just make sure to get some nice compressionless housing and run full housing with stainless cables.

Its just sad. For example, a set of Avid BB7's are $320AUD. Thats $236USD or $276 CAD. A few months ago I purchased some Oury slide on grips since I really needed new grips. The cheapest I could get them for was $25 AUD ($19USD, $21 CAD). The place i usually go now to purchase sutff is eBay.

I met a few guys form Oz and one from NZ who had purchased bikes over here and had a friend at a shop back home mail them a phoney receipt to get it back into Oz/NZ without paying the taxes/tariff. If you are in the market for a very expensive bike , the money you save by doing this could pay for the trip here(or so I was told) .

Nah i wouldn't go through that. I sometimes get stuff from my LBS, like for example chain lube. Thats not all that expensive, but when it comes to parts I rarely go. eBay is good, but I only go through people that live in Australia.
